Hello everyone! Name is Coal. I'm a long time lurker, however, this is my first post!

About 6 months ago I started to slowly work on a space for myself in my back yard. Winter came and I got busy with other things and the project went on the backburner. Now I'm about to start a business and need my own space more than ever. I plan on using the space as my workshop and office. Mostly everything I've used so far has been salvaged from houses that were being demolished in Charleston, South Carolina. My dad is a demolition contractor so when he sees something that I may want he calls me and normally I tear it out of the buildings.

I got most of the difficult stuff some before winter, however, I still have a good ways to go. I need to finish the slate roof, insulate, finish the floors, paint, etc. Basically a lot needs to be done. When I'm done I hope to have a unique space I can use and enjoy. Below is a current list of things I plan to do:

  • Refinish floors
  • Insulate walls
  • Add overhang to porch
  • Put wood panelling on walls
  • Add more lighting
  • Wire for Cable/Internet
  • Add AC (it gets really hot here!)
  • Sand and paint just about everything
  • Replace some glass in windows and doors
  • Build a desk and workbench
  • Add storage

I'll be keeping a lot of everything I do here. I will probably be asking for advice as well. This is a little different from you're normal backyard shed/workshop so hopefully this thread will entertain some people. Current pictures are posted below. Check out the view!

Yeah I ran some underground electric to it. I currently have a light inside and outside, 4 electrical sockets inside, and 1 electrical socket outside.

I need to add more lighting inside asap. I'm also trying to figure out what I want to do for the porch. Bouncing between just a simple overhang to possibly screening the porch in.

Now that is one very cute little building and I am very interested! It looks very nice for a place to start a great shop. I like especially the back side with the deck and view. This place can be fantastic with a little TLC. I am going to be watching this thread with a lot of interest! It would be so much fun to redo something like that!!!

Best Regards
Herb Spencer

Been super busy the past week and haven't had a lot of time to work on the shed. I was able to spend some of my day sanding the floors though. It's going to take me a while to get finish sanding, but at least I got a start. Smells like heart pine.

Floors are looking good. Will be awesome when you get them finished. I've got a few nice heart pine boards salvaged from our 150+ year old church downtown that I am eventually going to get around to making a table top out of.

There definitely is a lot of it in Charleston. We still find a lot of it in old building we are tearing up. I've been taking it to a mill in Georgetown since I was 16 to turn it into flooring.

Scored a nice table in the trash today! Well, it will be nice with a little love.
