I'm going to be building a small set of shelves for my son's new bedroom. I'm curious as to what type of wood would best serve a small shelf for his Hot Wheels collection. I'm still a novice with wood working, but I have enough tools to tackle things like this. I was thinking MDF, but if there is a better suggestion, I'd love to hear input. The plan is to sand and paint it, as well. I do not at this point have a router or joiner, but I do have a circular saw and a small sander. Any and all input would be awesome. I hope this a step toward more wood working projects, as well.

I'd use MDF or plywood for the back piece, cut kerfs for 3/8” deep for the shelfs, and insert strips of 2” x 1/8” aluminum.

Simple 1x pine boards...been the general choice for novice work for years

Keep your rip cutting to a minimum

Use #1 grade for minimal knots if your painting.

Poplar wood even more clear still easy to work

With a little learned skill you could dado or even rabbet cut with circ

MDF unless you love sanding and grain lines showing through.

MDF is straight, flat, and easy to work with. I DO NOT recommend working with reclaimed for your first couple projects. That **** is beat on, toxic, warped, nail embedded hipster ***** bait.

As for hanging, look up "french cleat", a great way to hang something like shelves. You can make it from the MDF.

You may want to consider running a few passes with the circ saw to create a shallow dado (channel) for the wheels to rest in? Or a lip, just incase the shelf isnt level :]

And paint it orange [emoji16][emoji106]

I'm partial to baltic birch plywood if exposed but plain pine "white wood" is good too.

A tablesaw is a good way to make repetitive accurate cuts but protect those fingers!

I sincerely appreciate the suggestions this far. I will be taking all of them into account. I did fail to mention that this will be on the floor so he can reach the cars. However, if this goes well, I can build another piece for his wall using a French cleat (it's used on another heavy wall decoration in his room).
