Small socket what is it for?

I bought a couple of gable ended Tool boxes with some tools inside. What I was mostly after was the SK Wayne socket set. But there were an additional 3 sets of socket sets included a Husky and 2 off shore sets.
One 1/4" drive socket has me at a disadvantage. Can you guys tell me what it is for? One other item is it has some kind of retainer spring inside the socket. I included a standard socket to show for illustrative purposes.
The markings are as follows:
USA PAT 4644831
POC PAT 27181
No other markings.

Most likely a bit adapter for 1/4" hex bits.

Wow. I'll have to dig a little deeper into my new boxes for some hex bits.

It's for hex bits for sure I have the same one.

Yes,its for hex bits.I use mine on the end of a 1/4 driver with the female end on the driver.I have a 1/4 breaking bar inserted for the tough jobs.

Didn't mean to confuse anybody,I have the 1/4 drive handle that comes with my socket set.In the end of the handle,it has a female receptacle,I use a small breaker bar if I need more torque to drive a hex in the op wonder what this tool is used for.
