Small Suburban 2 Car

In August 2014 my wife and I moved into our new home and garage. In looking at houses we looked at several with 3+ car garages and detached shops, but none of the houses were up to par and with a new baby on the way we weren't ready t take on a fixer upper.

The house we found was perfect for us in the house and neighborhood, but the garage was on the small side at 19'x19'. Our old house had a 22'x22' garage, but also contained the washer, dryer, furnace and water heater. Since the new house had only the water heater in the garage and taller ceilings I decided I could make it work with the agreement from the wife that her car would have to live outside.

The Garage will serve as storage for my Jeep and Car and a shop for the wood and metal working I do and any other projects I may get into.

Currently I am still working through clearing the excess stuff out of the garage that accumulated during the move and starting in on some storage solutions.

Here is the house in the one dusting of snow we had last winter.

After moving in the garage became the dumping ground as we settled into the new house.






The first step to getting organized was clearing out as much as I could. Like getting the piano sold and getting the bigger things out of the way.

Then I cleared everything off one wall at a time and put up a base coat of white paint.



Once that was done I put up a temporary shelf to get more stuff off the floor and out of the way.


And installed a garage door opener.

Then I was distracted by some other projects around the house. Which I will share a few picture because we all like to see what others are working on.

Fencing in the side yard area so the shop supervisors would have an outside place to hang out.



And putting down some mulch so they wouldn't bring in to much mud this winter.

Then our daughter was born in December and garage time became hared to come by. But I still managed to find some time to build a bed frame for our room so we could move up from mattresses sitting on the floor.




And get started on making a high chair for her

I have also collected a few things for the process of the garage renovation.
Some slatwall and fixtures from CL



And some LED light Fixtures from Costco. To add to the 2 4ft T8s that the builder added to the garage.

Playing with mouting locations. Thinking about wall mounting them bellow the door tracks to get some light even when the door is open.

That brings it about to where I am now. Last weekend I started to build the upper cabinets that will go along the back wall for the garage. I am building 5 cabinets that are about 4' tall and 2' wide. Then below this will be the slatwall and a modular rolling work bench I am still figuring out.

First step was ripping down the plywood with my improvised track saw (Rectangular tube and a circular saw)




Then started drilling the pocket holes for the tops, bottoms and upper/lower braces.


And assembling the boxes


And hanging on the wall



Next step will be getting the remaining boxes up on the wall. Then adding shelves and face frames, and finally doors.

Thanks, was unsure about the pocket hole jig, but since I got it I've been using it for everything. Makes things go together much easier.

Kreg jigs are one of the most useful pieces in cabinet making.

Yes they are now looking into getting some of their clamps and other accessories.

I will get some pictures of it this weekend. It is not completely finsihed yet. Have it mostly built but still need to sand and stain. Then need to figure out a tray of some sort.

In between yard work managed to get a little time in the garage and got the remaining cabinet boxes hung on the back wall.



And as requested a few more pictures of the high chair. Still need to sand and finish it.

Slow progress, but continuing to move forward.

Added shelves to the cabinet boxes. Went with fixed position shelves as at my old house I placed the shelves in the middle and never moved them. The center shelf is raised to clear the doorbell transformer that was on that wall.


Also started on a base for my sliding miter saw. I had a swivel and extend base from an old entertainment center that I used to make the saw pivot and extend so that it can be tucked in closer to the wall.

Next step is adding some bracing to the saw cabinet and then paint on everything before face frames and doors.

Looking good. I like the bed frame. I might have to try something like that out in the future.

Interesting concept on the Keezer tower. Haven't seen one like that before. Are you on HomeBrewTalk? How were you able to fit 5 kegs in what appears to be a 7cuft freezer, without a collar?

Oh and my jeep used to live inside, until we had kids and she had to load them up in the winter or the rain to take them to school. Now my **** is outside...

That is one of my wife's projects. She is painting it and using it as a china cabinet. I just need to figure out how to get the heavy thing upstairs.

Not on HomeBrewTalk, I haven't brewed in quite a while. It is bigger than 7Cuft, I think its an 11, but can fit 7 kegs in there and only have 5 tapped at a time.

Wheels are take offs from a JK Rubicon. It is on a 2" OME suspension with a fair amount of cutting. Front Bumper is custom witha HF winch, rear is a highly modified ARB Toyota Hilux rear bumper. Other than that it is mostly stock.

Planning to get a Suburban for her in the next couple years, it will be to big to fit in the garage.
