I installed a similar one for a friend. Up north the incoming water is damn cold, the thing could barely make warm water.

Maybe would make sense to have a storage tank in the garage to pre-warm the water to garage temp....assuming the garage is heated.

I taped the in and out lines together to temper the cold but not much help. I would solder two copper lines together (twin them) if it were a priority .

If you want to be able to heat water in a short distance as it flows through it is going to take a lot of energy.....

I have a water heater in my shop of the same style and I used 8ga wire on it. It is important to remember with one of these that to get hotter water you have to slow the flow down so it spends more time in the heater. It is a hard concept for some to understand. The outlet temp is also reliant on the inlet temp so in the winter you will NOT get as high a temp as in the summer.

I think a small electric is the way to go over the tankless style. We has a tankless at work and it always had problems.

The problem with a small electric is they are almost as expensive as a large unit and they cost you money even if you do not use them. I may go a week without even turning the water on in my shop.
