Currently adding loft shelving over the garage door side rails. Just insulating and heating it was the best part. It gets cold in Canada during the winter.

I would like to see pictures of how you did this when your finished if this is possible. I am thinking of doing somethign similar and trying to figure out the best way to do it to maximize space.

No problem. Had the idea for years but finally saw a post on here by Foulkes for "loft storage" and finally got my *** in gear. Check out his thread but I do plan on posting pics when I am done. Just went looking for the thread and I hope this works but have a look at his pics.

I would agree with the "lighting" response. I had a professional design my overhead lighting. My electrician was dumbfounded when I told him how many fixtures I wanted. But...when we got done it was great.

That being said...every single person that sees my garage for the first time comments on the lift. That seems to be the focal point.

Plumbing compressor in from another room. Even the quietest compressors are loud.

Black, you using Hershey's syrup for motor oil? :D

Is the floor drain in the garage, or just outside it?

Notice it's in the yellow drain pan. That's coolant:eek:

It's 1 foot inside the door and goes the full length of the garage. Floor is slightly sloped from the rear to the drain.

Wow that is some serious rust if that is coolant!!!!!!!!!!

It had been sitting for almost a year and a half. Took about 10 flushes to get the **** out of it. Need to replace the radiator eventually but I think I got most of it cleaned out.

Hoist for garage attic.

Yes, this is not a quick little project but I bet you can get it done in a Saturday (as long as you shop ahead of time). Anyway, it's so nice to get snow blowers, presssure washers, mowers, etc. off the garage floor when not in use. It ultimately keeps the garage clutter free.

Stereo for the garage - What a joy to have tunes in there.

What do you guys do with you used oil and coolant? Really?

Oil Goes to Autozone they get rid of it for free and Coolant goes down the drain. Most municipalities sewage treatment plants can break down antifreeze.

I wouldn't be pooring it down the drain..you're just asking for trouble. Sort of stupid to pollute your own drinking water.

On another note. The woodstove, and pegboard on one whole wall made my garage worlds better.

That's it - now I'm DEFINITELY going to put mine outside (MINUS 40 be damned!!). I have a fairly quite 3 cyclinder unit, but I'd still prefer not to hear it inside.

Finished it and put in a lift and something to put on it.

YUP - the lift has been a godsend. Definitley up there with a compressor and impact wrench!

My top 3 then: LIGHTING! I have wall lighting that really helps too.

LARGE doors at either end (or at least an access door)

Vast majority of sewage treatment plants have no problem treating antifreeze. I called and they said they handle it just fine. No problem dumping it down the drain just don't dump it down the storm drains.

I live in Chicago, IL so prices are inflated so we can finance our corrupt gov't.

12' of barn door track + "door" hanging hardware = $80
1,300 HF hoist = $99 (on sale every other month or so)
bolts + Wood to mount track to roof trusses = $20
Being able to get anything into the garage attic = Priceless!!!

Cutting the 4'X4' hole in my garage attic floor took less than 10 minutes with my Rigid sawzaw.

Actually, any lift will make working on cars a true pleasure. Especially, when you can wake up the next morning with nothing hurting from the day before.

I've been surprised by how much I like:

? The retractable extension cord reel.
? Having the air compressor somewhere else, just a reel with the line in the garage.
? An old shelf stereo that I can run the MP3 player into.
? Lights that are triggered by a motion sensor.
? A tile floor instead of raw concrete.
? One work surface that functions like a drafting table for sketching out ideas.
? Three other work surfaces, each at the same height, two of which fold down from the wall.
? A select group of most-used tools out and in easy reach on peg board over the main work bench.

NO! Don't ever do that. Antifreeze is a TOXIC substance it must be disposed/recycled properly. Most shops will take it and recycle it.

Please, take the antifreeze argument to another thread. It has been discussed here at GJ ad nauseam. Some of you new guys need to look around and search a little.

Mine cost me nothing out of pocket at the time. I had a HF winch laying around ($79 if you go buy one) same with the bearings and steel for the track (maybe $20). I also had some 2x8, 2x4 and 2x3 cutoffs that I framed the door and opening with ($15). I got the idea here but can't remember from who to give them the credit.

Ditto here. I have the compressor in seperate shed built on the back of the garage and the constant silence in the garage has been well worth the cost of building the shed.

Wireless internet, so you can keep the Garage Journal pulled up to see what you need to add next!

1. The 4 post lift (not so small)
2. The bathroom
3. Insulated
4. TV/stereo/satelite
5. never enough storage.
6. Really good lighting.

Laundry Sink (You'll never realize how often you'll use one, until you have it)
Awesome Lighting (like everyone else)
Floor Epoxy (clean ups are a snap)
5.1 Surround Sound (no, I'm not joking--I GOTTA have tunes while I'm working)
Triple Insulated Garage Doors/Fully Insulated Garage (I'm always comfy now!)

I'd love to say a lift (but I have keep saving my pennies for that one)

Definitely the bathroom! The urinal and condom machine designate it as a "guy's place"!

Gotta' have someplace to get a cold drink, right? That's where the Pepsi machine, root beer barrel and Bastian-Blessing soda fountain come in handy!
