Beautiful weather. Decided to upgrade my woodwork shed a little with new paint, and made two doors on side for storage of lumber, pipe, etc. Added two beds in front with bushes to please wife. I am loving my wood work shed!! The underbuilding storage is real handy so I will do the same thing on the other side as well.

Best Regards
Herb Spencer

Hi Herb
That wood shed is lookin pretty spiffy with the flower beds and all
It looks like raw dirt under the shed won't moisture affect your stored lumber??

How long of a piece can you slide under there??

I like your color combo and your designs on the doors

Thanks for your visit!! I will be storing odds and ends and pieces of treated lumber, steel fence posts, steel and plastic pipe, conduit, etc. All the stuff we have left over after projects, but have no place to put it. I have a regular wood storage overhead in the shed. I can put 16' long pieces under the shed. I built a rack of sleepers under the side so nothing lies on the ground. I also had to evict an armadillo who had taken up residence under there. The colors are the same on my shed, lawn building, and garage.
Again sorry about your pet dog and hope your coping with that.

Best Regards
Herb

Looks Great! did you spray paint It or brush and did you use a primer?

340wedge

Thanks for your visit!! As the shed was already painted previously, I did not need a primer, just a good wipe down. I used a 3 inch brush to paint it. While I do have a sprayer, the wind was not just right for outside spraying, and then you have the sprayer clean up, etc. I prefer to just brush it out and was pretty happy with the turn out.

Thanks for your comments!!

This sword belonged to my great grandfather. He was a member of the "knights of this or that", I'm not sure exactly what it was. It is a family heirloom now, and has been in my attic for years and years. I decided to see if it would clean up. The materials are good, and it seems to be a brass scabbard and handle designs, and the blade hard steel. I am placing this at around 150 years old at least.

Today was my Fall clean up of the shop and it needed it badly. I was amazed at after moving nearly 3/4ths of my wood working tools to the shed shop, I am still "wall to wall". Looking at it though, I do seem to have a lot more walking space in the shop. I have left enough woodworking tools in the garage to be able over the winter to do what I need to do. Sometimes it seems the more I take "out", the more I have left "in". Odd how that seems to work!
Anyway, I am good to go and I now feel I have more room, and the space is working well for me. I have plenty of room for the car in there, and that was my main concern this clean up.

Best Regards
Herb Spencer

I found this
FCB Friendship, Charity, Benevolence-found on K of P swords
Knights of Pythias. that's what I found by what I saw from pics.
I would like to see more of the markings but find it interesting.

Gerard

Thanks for your link. I will look up the Knights of Pythias and see what kind of a "secret society" my G- grandfather was involved with. Knowing what I have heard from the family, I would not be too shocked---LOL. Cleaning up his sword was fun, and the metals were really nice in it. I am thinking I will make a nice case to put it in. G-grandfather was also some kind of town marshal, and I heard stories about him shooting someone during a robbery on the town square. Trouble is, now that I am interested, everyone who could tell me about him has passed away.

Thanks so much!!!

Best Regards
Herb

Thanks again for your research. After the clean up on the sword, it has become something I plan to keep and pass on after poor ole' Herb bites the dust. I may even make a plaque for my home office and put it up in there. One thing they taught us in the Army was "Never fall on your own sword", so I will try not to do that---LOL.

Thanks again

Herb,

Fantastic job on the Fall clean up. It is amazing just how different the garage or home for that matter can feel when you do this.

The sword and its history are just fascinating, thanks for sharing.

I believe a nice display case with some lights would look great.

Made some changes to my buffing and polishing cart. Added a Dremel Tool and Flexible Shaft. Also added a heavy duty flexible shaft to use various polishers, wire brushes, sanding wheels, etc. Added a lower motor from an old band saw I had. I cut it up, and saved the motor and switch (Never let a good crisis or a good motor go to waste!). I mounted the lower 1/4th of the old band saw on front of the polishing cart and put on a buffing wheel. I used the other half of the mount to affix a post to hang wheels on. I now have three motors in use, and the Dremel tool on the hanger. I like the sander flapper wheel in the flex shaft. It removes rust quickly.

The buffing & polishing station just gets better and better Herb. I also enjoyed seeing the pics of the Fall clean-up of your shop. Those pictures really show the high level of detail you've put into your shop. Really, really nice job.

Thanks as always for your visit and nice comments. The buffing station has morphed into exactly what I need for the shop. I am still working on it, and except for some work arbors and the heavy flexible shaft, it has cost me nothing much as I already had the most of it on hand.

When you are cleaning up your projects this winter , you will so day how you ever managed to get anything done without the polishing and buffing station. Maybe by March you will be looking for extra things since you will have exhausted the list.

1/2 Cup From "A Shed Down Under" has infected me to clean up and restore my planes. Visit his thread and check out the fine job he has done on his. I will probably be ok with dis-assembly, cleaning, and polishing, but I will most likely struggle with getting the blades to that razor sharp quality. Most of mine are either Stanley or Craftsman, but 1/2 cup has the best of the best, a Record Plane!!
Here are the photos of my planes to be restored. Photo 5 is a cheap block plane, and photo 6 is from about 1900.

Best Regards

Herb,

You have some real gems there.

I am looking forward to seeing how the turn out as they look in much better condition than mine to start with.

I have to fess up to not being very good at honing the blades as well, my stone is, well lets say, in less than pristine condition. It was one that came from my dads and after todays attempt to hone the blade it demonstrated that I really do need to get a brand newy.

Many thanks for your endorsement of my humble efforts.

I put the older Craftsman #4 Smoothing Plane in the brine last night to begin soaking. I am anxious to see it clean. A lot of mine have various paint on them, some brass, and then the bare metal. Would you be inclined to go back with the original paint colors, or just polish them out to bare metal?
I am thinking on the wooden handles, just a light sanding, a wipe of stain, and a spray of gloss sealer.

Herb,

Looking at your planes I would be inclined to replicate the original finish, see how they come up after the soaking in brine and make the call then. I totally agree with you approach to the timber handles.

I decided to work on the Craftsman No 409 first as it was in the worst condition. The Craftsman has a neat little four sided blade. You can swap it around 4 times before you have to resharpen. The plane was rusted but cleaned up well. I will hone the blade later when I get a few more of these done. Also stayed with the original colors, which was a pain to redo!! (Pic #1 was the before pic)

Best Regards

Herb,

You are quite busy I see, very nice work and photography BTW
I always enjoy reading your posts.

Hugo

Happy to have you come by again!! How are things progressing in your shop?
I have been happily piddling along in mine, doing this and that. The weather the rest of the week will lead me outside to get the lawn and house in tune for the coming cold weather. But I can always go back to the shop and play around if it rains!! Also got to take the Ms. HSpencer on some fall foliage sight seeing this weekend.

Well I have gotten two planes done so far. The shop is an absolute mess but I don't care! All I can think of is getting that "next one" done. The Dremel tool is a must have on this work. 1/2Cup was right about this being so addictive!

Best Regards
