Small Two Car Operation

I find that the tin foil reacts with vinegar to cut off the worn on grime. I think there is a small chemical reaction to it. Some people even add baking soda with the vinegar. I haven't tried that. I think the steel wool would also work as a good scrubber. On the buffer, I use two wheels. I have a sisal wheel that I use red buff compound on, and I apply white compound to the second wheel. If you aren't careful, you can get some streaks on chrome, so I recommend just using brasso, and buff it with a non abrasive sisal wheel. I am no buffing expert, but I learned early that you can mess stuff up faster than you think. I use just a "touch" of the compound, and apply it often as I go along. I am also having real good luck soaking in Simple Green solution (pretty strong).

I've used baking soda with electrolysis. Last time I added some vinegar and it worked great.

Sorted and moved all NON craftsman tools from chest/cabinet into this smaller chest. This set is mostly Snap-On, Proto, S&K, and Williams. There was enough other brands to make a pretty complete tools set. I had to clean all this stuff as well. I want my roller set to be all craftsman tools.

Your shop is one of my top favorites here. Its just right. Love the landscaping also, gives it a nice touch.

Sorted and moved all NON craftsman tools from chest/cabinet into this smaller chest. This set is mostly Snap-On, Proto, S&K, and Williams. There was enough other brands to make a pretty complete tool set. I had to clean all this stuff as well. I want my roller set to be all craftsman tools. This will be next to my workbench and will be my work box. I will pass the refinished 50 year old Craftsman set to my son in law when I "make a final swipe with my foot at the proverbial bucket"

Here is some of the craftsman stuff that goes in the roller cabinet when its redone. All this has been cleaned up. Also some new craftsman tools I bought to replace missing or worn out items. The first photo is engine tools I had when I worked at Sears Service in around 1967. I have several more boxes of things from the chest/cabinet to clean and sort!! I am seeing the light at the end of the tunnel though.

Great work as always herb. Got question? How you gonna get down to original paint? I was scraping off some stickers off my chest and that original paint is very strong. I'm curious how your going to do yours so when I do mine I avoid some pitfall. I do admit I'm not doing a full resto but more of a refresh.

Way back at the beginning, you posted a pic of a 1960's Craftsman saw. I also have that model, was my fathers. Still works but the cord is so bad on it, I quit using it until I can replace it. Dad is still around, just letting me have the "heavier work" tools lol. I had a matching orbital sander as well, that was left behind at our rental house years ago, I wish I could find where it went. Same black bakelite style handles. But I did lay hands on the saw this weekend, was going to use it and decided I don't really need a 120v charge that bad
Hey Gerard. I know a true restro would go to OE paint. I have thought so much about that, but I always come back to wanting the chest/cabinet to stay red. I have now decided to keep it (bright) red with contrasting red drawers (darker red).
I will do a full sand down, and tape off, then on a calm sunny day I will shoot it. I don't have a spray booth, so I have to paint outdoors.

Hey Crzymnd72. I dearly love those 1960 Craftsman power tools. I have the saw you mentioned and it works great. I also have a 3/8 drill, and two routers.
All the tools still work great. My favorite tool I have is Dad's 7 inch Craftsman Table saw, which I have shown in my thread. Sadly, if something breaks on it there are no longer any parts out there for it. It was made by Emerson Electric and they have nothing available for it either.

Actually, most of us here have only one shop. We have to do the woodworking in the same shop we keep our "open" tool boxes. We don't realize how much airborne junk is flying around, only to land on our good mechanics tools and into our lungs. I can't have more space for a woodshop, but I can get myself a dust filter and hang it from the ceiling.

Tools are looking good, Herb. What did you do to the screws on the Wilton clamps; they look chromated? I feel your pain about the Craftsman tools. I live less than a mile from a large Sears store in a mall and the tool dept has about 10% of the stock it had several ago, most of it is imported and getting anything warranted is almost impossible. The last time I took in 3 sockets and a screwdriver, they had to send them "in" and it took 5 weeks to get the replacements in the mail. Sad to say, but I get better service at HF. I have about $40K in Snap-On at work, but I used to have a lot craftsman sockets because it was so easy to just run to a store for a replacement whenever there was a problem that it wasn't worth the investment to upgrade to a tooltruck piece.
Gonna sound like a ****-up here, but your garage is probably still extremely awesome even when it is very dirty and disorganized( as if that ever happens, lol). Take care and thanks for sharing your journey!

Herb, I understand where you are coming from in terms of the dust issue.
Nearly all of my dirty work is done outside with the exception of what is done on the belt linisher and pedestal grinder as they are fixed, that said I tend to keep there use to a minimum in any case.
Most of my stuff is on castors for that very reason, I have an apron in the front of the shed where I do the majority of my fabrication work.
At the end of the weekend I always spend 10 minutes vacuuming, wiping over all my bench tops and just giving things a general tidy up, putting things back where they belong.

Thanks so much for your comments. On the Wilton I just took it apart and took the screw to a brass wire brush to clean the grit off, Then I used red rouge to buff it out, finishing with a plain sisal wheel and white rouge. The metal in those clamps are first rate material!
I wish a had a full set of Snap-On, but I have too many tools already (oops that is forbidden to say here). Anyway, I could not justify the higher prices of Snap On unless I was still working for money.

Man, I just love these small spaces that are so organized and make efficient use of space all while providing a place to work on all sorts of projects. I'll bet you could walk in there and grab a 5/16" drill bit, 1/4-20 wing nut and a handful of 6d nails and be out in less than 45 seconds. I waste sooo much time looking for stuff it drives me insane. I have a 22x22 that is set up for strictly auto repair as I buy and sell cars and do mechanical and paint and body for a number of people. All the woodworking, garden tools, boat accessories and power equipment is in the 8x12 behind the garage.
Seeing such efficient use of your space has really lit a fire under me **** to get in there and get it straightned up. I'm one of those guys that packs every shelf and every inch of wall space with whatever I have!

Good Day 1/2 Cup, always a pleasure to hear from you. I too am incorporating every woodworking tool on castors to roll outside. I can set up for table saw, miter saw, router, and sander in just a few minutes. I made up a special power supply cord that all plug into and I am in an "outside" cabinet shop very easily.

Hi bwitt, I really appreciate your visit and your kind remarks. My shop operation has evolved over about 35 years and I am still working on trying to make it what I want. I am space limited but it is enough for me to use to enjoy my retirement years. All I could wish for would be a room all it's own to set up a wood shop, but I can get by as it is. In all, I am very pleased with what I have.

Thanks for dropping by my thread and thanks for your kind comments. I never sold cars myself, but my dad managed a Buick/GMC dealership, so I grew up around it. That line is just a jab at car salesmen, but I guess I need to change it. Things in the car business have actually changed, as I saw when I bought my new Subaru last July. A lot of dealers finally dropped the old car sales jargon. They are "customer service" people now, rather than old school sales folks, like my signature line reads. "Let me talk to my manager" LOL.

Here is the 1968 Craftsman Tool Set and Cabinet I have recently been redoing. I found a stamping in the top chest showing a mfg date of "01-68". It was a lot of work, but it is done. The tools were inventoried, cleaned, damaged ones replaced, and the cabinet and chest was repaired and repainted. I am pleased at the outcome of the set. Hopefully it will last me another 45 Years!!

Wow, amazing job on the tools and chest! I need to give a lot of mine a good clean too. This thread and others on here make me feel a bit sad about my mismatched collection of variously branded, mixed cheap and expensive, old and new tools, which I was perfectly happy with before discovering Garage Journal!

I also had a mixture of brand tools, inherited, purchased, and just showed up somehow. I also had the 1968 craftsman set and chests which were filthy and neglected over all those years. It did me good to take out the non craftsman stuff and put the set together as it came in 1968. I also added several other automotive tools to it, making a pretty complete set for itself. All my other branded tools, as shown in a previous post went into my smaller set.

There was a little wear and play in the upper chest top drawer slides (the three small ones), but I packed them in white grease and they worked ok. Not sure if I could find replacement slides at this point or not.
I was well pleased with the outcome of the redo.
