DING DING DING... Mr Herb Spencer YOU ****!!! That's a nice box and the tools are gravy. Nice score.

Thanks!!! I am basking in my win.

The box should totally restore well. The Proto OE color is a kind of orange/red
which I don't like much. I also need a lock and will look on line. I think it will be a Sunset Red to match my Craftsman box.

Best Regards
Herb

As above DING, DING, DING and another for good measure, its official that we have a winner Herb, YOU **** big time.

Note to file: this is the first I have given out and deservedly so.

BTW, great job on the bench Herb..

Regards

Thanks 1/2 Cup

I am so looking forward to the total restore of it, and the tool clean up and finding out what I actually did get in the drawers. I am going to say the used Snap on and Proto tools would be valued north of $300.00 at least.

Best Regards
Herb

Where is 1/2 Cup and Gerard?

If you dudes won't give me a YOU **** for this, you won't give one to anybody.

$100.00

Bought it today, all the tools are either Proto, Snap-On or Craftsman.

Special thanks to Don Long for kicking me out of the shop to go looking for restorable jacks today.

Back at you!!!

Best Regards
Herb Spencer

Definitely a YOU ****, Herb! Great score.

What an awesome find! YOU DEFINATELY DESERVE A YOU ****! Look forward to the restore. You are going to have several of these toolboxes restored before I ever get to mine. The wife is having a garage sale tomorrow and my woodshop is full of junk! Can't wait til its cleared out.

At company level, there were around 4 to 6 mechanics and a Motor Sergeant.
At Battalion level, there were around 12 mechanics, with specialist like a Welder, Sheet Metal Worker, etc. The individual boxes were issued to the mechanics, and their names were stenciled on them like:
SMITH, John D. SGT, A Co, 1/232 Inf.

The boxes were a source of pride for the mechanics, and some guys would paint and re stencil their box at the slightest sign of scratch. Many of them would throw out the useless items to lighten the weight of the box, putting those back in for the "showdown inspections" from the Commander or Property Book Officer (PBO).

The Motor Sergeant was issued a "SHOP Equipment, Organizational Maintenance, Common Number One." which is a complete shop and it fits on a TRUCK, 2-1/2 Ton, M35A2. The Common Number One is fully deployed with the unit when it goes to the field or overseas. At the motor pool, if a mechanic needs a tool not in his tool kit, he sees the Tech Supply (parts man) and gets it issued for that job.

The Motor Sergeant issues the mechanics a work order (DA Form 2404) on each job, and this is completed by both the mechanic and the assigned vehicle driver. If it is a flat tire, the driver fixes it at the motor pool with the use of the tire changers and tools for that use.

The motor pool undergoes an annual Command Motor Maintenance Inspection (CMMI) and it is a full "balls to the walls" inspection of the status of the unit's vehicles and equipment. This is four packs of cigarettes a day for all smokers, especially the Commander and his staff NCO's. Now of days the CMMI is called something else, and a lot of what I have told you has probably changed since the late 1990s.

This is about 10 times what you wanted to know, but I don't like leaving a half answered question. LOL

Best Regards
Herb

Hold up on the switching the plug covers! Red for Craftsman electric and silver for other electric tools.

Very cool Proto box Herb. You got a smoking deal and yes, YOU ****! It's interesting as I've never seen one yet like that with the logo in each handle. Always a continuing education here on GJ.

Thanks it was quite a find. I started disassembling the Proto box today. It was in great condition, just needs clean, paint, and a new lock and keys. Also sorted tools and placed in degreaser. Sockets and ratchets alone are worth the price I paid!

Thanks Captain14

I decided to redo the receptacles in modular plugs to dress up the bench.

Neither had I seen this particular Proto box before. It might have been a promotional model. I really like the chest!

Here is the Proto box, disassembled, cleaned and painted. It came out pretty well.
All ready to be filled with tools. Waiting on a new lock set which is on order.
Not bad for a hundred dollar bill!!

Best Regards
Herb Spencer

Man you work so fast, that box looks great!

Dennis

Thanks! I had been wanting one of these (Snap-On, Proto, or MAC) for a long time. I am now in process of cleaning and polishing the tools I got with the box. There are many of them, mostly all are Proto, but a lot of Williams, Snap-On, and Craftsman. Very little of the items that came with the box were junk. There were also some new auto parts like wheel bearings and fittings in there.

It was as they say "A bird's nest on the ground". LOL

Best Regards
Herb

Found these in the tool box. It will make a great key ring for the new lock and keys I have coming for the box.

I love this sort of stuff. Nostalgic!!

Your tool box is looking fantastic Herb, well done.

I can wait to see how the tools come up, if they are like any thing you have done in the past they are in good hands.

Regards

Thanks so much 1/2 Cup

Your kind remarks as always greatly appreciated. I found a few unusual and collectable tools in the box. I will post those up when I have them cleaned.

Found this pair of pliers in the Proto box. Anyone know what they are for?

I am thinking air conditioning or maybe a snap ring plier of some sort.

They may have had a spring in them.

Best Regards
Herb Spencer

Thanks. I went back to the same place where I got the Proto box, and picked up a Snap-On 3/8 in air ratchet, for peanuts. I won't brag about it, but will post a photo.

Herb,

Your lights, as well as being very practical and add a nice ambience to the shop.

Well done.

Regards

Thanks 1/2 Cup

I found the lights over the top of the tool boxes were a big help for my old worn out eyes. Easy to do as well!

Best Regards
Herb

Did a reorganization today to gain more space. Changed woodworking to one end of shop. Wiped down and swamped the place out. I was getting tired of the mess.
I did gain some walking around room.

Best Regards

Herb, the new arrangement looks great. Isn't it amazing how much more space you can find in there even after it's been service? By the way, I'll be copying the hardwood flooring table tops. I've got some left over from a project inside the house. Did you put it down with a regular flooring nailer or glue or something else? I would guess in that small width no provision needs to be made for expansion. Oh and that new Proto box, what deal, you hit it one out of the park there!
