Wow Herb, I look away for a couple of weeks and come back to find that you've gone upmarket.
I must say though - the granite bench tops certainly look pretty good.

Nice job on the jerry can too (I had to go back a few pages to catch up).

Mark

Really nice having you stop by. Thanks as always for your visit, and kind comments.
Much appreciated Sir!!

Best Regards

New Plan for the Granite

I agree the granite is too "nice" for a "garage". It is actually also impractical. I found this out by chunking a claw hammer on it yesterday, and fixing a lawn mower flat tire on it last night. Not too good.
The new plan will be to have it cut and bullnosed and attached to my antique desk for the top. I think this is a better idea than a workbench. At least I won't wind up busting it!! Also will gain a couple inches of desktop size with a 1" all around overhang. Should look cool too!!

Best Regards
Herb

HS: probably a good idea putting the granite inside the house. i have a granite surface plate and i wouldn't want to use it on a bench with hammers and other sharp heavy tools just getting set or dropped on it.

as always your shop, yard and house look fantastic.

Thanks as always for your visit. The two Granite pieces are currently at the shop getting cut and bullnosed. the pieces will have one tiny seam in the middle and will be cut for a 1" overhang on the desk. It will be glued down and will make the desk a heavy peice indeed.
Pics when installed to come!!

THE WILTON

Thanks to my good friend and fellow garage journal member drivesitfar, I am now the proud owner of a 4 inch Wilton Bullet Vise. This vise was made in 1946, which means I am one year older than the vise. Right now, I look better than the vise, but all that will change in a few days! Drives also included a few goodies in the box including a small Wilton clamp vise. I am VERY happy with this Wilton and will be busy for a few days on it!!
THANKS DRIVES!!
I love the vise!!
(ps) Getting a Wilton Bullet is awesome. Getting the exact model you want is OUTSTANDING!!

Best Regards
Herb

HERB: well you have the patience of JOB don't you? i might not be the fastest at getting something shipped, but i'm happy to see and hear that it arrived via FED EX as i shipped it. also glad you didn't get too tired removing all those screws holding all that wood crate i made to put inside the cardboard box.

speaking of good vises you sent me this picture and i'd love to see the BABY BULLET vise this duo would have if you can produce some offspring.

cheers and looking forward to your spiffing up of that old WILTON.

also since you are retired military maybe you can tell me what those Alloy 400 nuts and bolts i sent you were made for cause i've heard anything from space ships to submarines.

thanks again!!

Wow Herb that's awesome. I know you wanted you of those for a long long time. So you painting it red or gray?

Gerard

I am mulling over red or gray, but will probably do the Wilton in Metallic Blue to match my Craftsman Block Grinder. These two tools will share my main bench.
Yes, I have wanted THIS Wilton for a long time. I was beginning to feel I was the only garage journal member who did not have one.
I "stumbled" onto the Craftsman Block Grinder, and drivesitfar shipped me the Wilton, so now I have both. I am glad to be exempt from having to have a lift in the shop. I have three exemptions:

Too Old to do automotive work
Too low garage ceilings
Too far out of date to do any work on my own rigs

So 2 out of 3 I have (CMAN BLOCK AND WILTON BULLET) LOL

Best Regards
Herb

Right now the only thing I could tell you about the bolts and nuts is that I would sure hate to buy a box of 50 of them at current retail prices!!

Well I'm sure that whatever you do it will come out great. Your doing better than me because I don't have a Wilton bullet or a lift. I do have a Wilton Shop King though. LOL.

Herb,
Congrats on the Wilton bullet, that is one great score and thanks to drives for assisting in the conclusion of you unicorn hunt. Looking forward to your restoration on the vise.

As for the Alloy 400 bolts, I'm very familiar with that material. It is used a lot in HF Alkylation, using hydrofluoric acid as a catalyst in combining butane (C4, or four carbon molecules in a hydrocarbon chain) and Propane (C3, or three carbon molecules in a hydrocarbon chain) into longer C8 chains to form high octane gasoline. Alloy 400 or Monel is a VERY expensive metal, made up of about 2/3rds nickle and 1/3 copper. It has similar strength to grade 5 bolts at room temperature. Also sort of randomly at room temperature (above ~70°F it is just slightly magnetic, the colder it gets the magnetism increases.

Herb: to expand on JB's post here is the wikipedia page telling about his refinery Alklation unit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alkylation_unit

here's a page that came up with a google search of Alloy 400.

http://www.nickel-systems.com/materials/alloy-400-fasteners/

so i guess they will work for most any household use you might find for them outside your home or on your rigs.

since that vise is older than both of us (well not you cause you are older than dirt) it's probably made with better materials than today's vises, but we all don't like being opened up and looked at so BEE CAREFUL and best of luck in your spiffing up process.

cheers

That is quite a science lesson on the Alloy Bolts. It makes me think I need to put them in my Bank Safe Deposit Box. It is also kind of scary as some one might break in the shop and rob me of them before I get them secured.
I just hope those Hydrocarbon Chains don't strangle my new Wilton!!

I am some dumb but not plumb dumb

I am afraid now that I might not know everything there is to know??

Wilton in Rehab Process

Got it down and had a little challenge with the front jaw insert screws. Some heat and penetrant got that solved. I am NOT going to remove the rear hatch and inner nut as there is such nice machining and it will not be necessary. [(]If it ain't broke don't fix it!)[/B]
You have to look really hard to find the pins that hold the rear hatch on. I used a black marker to show where they are. You can see the original color if you look quite closely.
I will order some new screws for the jaw inserts.
It goes in soak for a couple days and we will then see where we are on cleaning.

Thanks and
Best Regards
Herb

Herb: i know it's your vise now, but PAT. PEND 11/46 date stamped Wiltons are not easy to come by so if you leave the jaws and screws as is i bet you'll appreciate more as time goes on. of course if the screws and jaws are not functioning as well as you like then it's your call. a good pair of copper or aluminum jaws would work well to give you more grip instead of new vise jaws if you need more grip. paint can always be changed unless original paint is in pristine condition then i'd advise members to keep original paint. here's my 60 year old Craftsman 5196 with original paint i'll just put BLO on or leave as is and my Rock Island 597 for a couple of examples of nice original paint on an old vise.

here's my Reed 4c sandblasted and with BLO with a before an after shot for a couple examples. you deserved a good vise and you got one of my keepers, but i know you'll take good care of it.

good luck
