I am in the market for a new garage door opener. My 17 year old Craftsman garage door (belt drive) is getting old and needs to be replaced.

I've never had a "smart" garage door (no experience with it). I would like to have it. Do you have any positive and negative experiences with it? Did it ever open by itself without you knowing? That's my #1 concern.

I have a 19 year old son, he (once in a while) FORGOT to close the garage door after he gets home. That is why I want to check my garage door, to make sure it's closed, with my smartphone while I'm away from home.

Which smart garage door do you recommend? Craftsman? Chamberlain? Genie? Those three brands I'd trust the most. I know that Sears is on the chopping block, but I still want a Craftsman.

Another concern: I am not sure if these new garage doors will work with my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee's built-in Homelink (this is a 19 year old vehicle). I understand that a new garage door opener will work on newer cars.

Just in case if you need to know what type of garage door I have, it's a standard residential-type two-car garage door with insulation I believe that the size is like 16 x 7.

thanks

Craftsman used to be made by Chamberlain/Liftmaster. Not 100% positive all their models still are. With the app, you will be notified anytime the door moves. So you can call, verify or look at your security system to see what's going on. I used to sell/install Liftmaster and still think they are the best value. They work. If your door is balanced, a 1/2 hp opener should be fine and as you already know a belt drive is much quieter than the chain, and just as dependable.

Not sure if your interested but I only use jack-shaft openers now. They are a superior design and much easier on the door itself.

I have Liftmaster brand which does have some troubles.

I have a pair of newer craftsman openers, belt drive, very quiet. App is now supported thru chamberlain " My Q" My set up includes a control panel that can be set to auto close after 1 minute, or 5 minutes, or a hold feature to keep it open. When walking into a dark garage, sensors will turn on the overhead lights in the openers.

I had pair of older craftsman openers from around 2002 or 2003, for some reason my neighbor found both doors open at 11 pm one night, I got spooked and swapped in new openers with the cell phone app to monitor the doors.

I've had a Chamberlin My Q for about 5 years now, bought the opener with the capability then bought the hub. It has worked flawlessly. I get a text when it opens and closes and i can give someone a one time code or give them a code that's good for a week or open it while their standing there.
