Are there free alternatives to Smart WIFI hubs for switches? I had used Wink but am not paying $6/mo. subscription. I only use the feature to turn on/off a leviton switch for exterior lights to a detached garage.

I’ve had good luck with Insteon. I believe they make WiFi controllable wall switches. I’m using the plug in modules for lamps, and motion sensors and have no complaints. No subscription.

i use smart things. The hub is around $70 and with WiFi is $120. I have one for my house and a second for the garage. The garage outside lights and the inside lights are on smart switches. The switches are the GE switches and cost around $40 a switch. The outside lights come on automatically at dusk (because of internet connection it adjusts as the days get shorter/longer) and automatically turn off at 11PM. Additionally, the inside lights are set to turn off at 11PM so even if I leave the lights on in the garage when I leave at night it will remind me.

Finally, the smart things is connected to my garage door to alert if it's open/closed. I have a chamberlain myQ which used to be connected via a widget to the smart things but that stopped working. So I can tell the status of the garage door (open/closed) in smart things but have to use a separate App to change the state of the garage door.

I have Wyze Bulbs in all of my outdoor lights. I use IFTT to set a dawn/dusk setting so they just come on automatically.

They also work with google home and Alexa. They make outlets as well, but no switches. The plus side, is you can just leave the switch on and control them via the bulbs.
