In my last shop I used 7/16 waferboard with a skim coat of drywall compound and white paint. It's cheap and durable and I can hang things anywhere. I don't have the time to put walls up in my new shop but when I do, I plan to do the same.

I used this on the exterior of my pole barn. It looks good and I have no complaints with the product. It has been on the building for about a year and a half. I have not yet painted it and so far shows no sign of wear. On an interior, you probably would not have to paint for many years IMO.

With the texture of the smart side, is it "too busy" to be an interior ceiling or wall covering?

Yes, I like it. The Slatwall kind of breaks it up.

I am getting ready to sheath the interior of my 30 x 35 in a few weeks and this brings new light to the equation.

Why not use drywall? What is the advantages of wafer board? Seems like a lot of work skimming the entire surface, also, I'm not that skilled with a trowel.

We are just finishing our garage area in which we used 4' x 9' SmartSide Siding from Menards. We painted ours "fog" gray. We feel it is nice siding, very heavy. We have found that it's easy to hide old nail holes if you want to move a picture or something around. By the way, the ceiling is 8' sheets of metal roofing from Home Depot. As long as we're giving credits, we used RaceDeck on the floor.

I think the primary advantage is that you don't need to worry about having to catch studs or using anchors for securing things to the wall.. Just put a screw wherever you need.

I did this in my garage and it works really well. I didn't skim coat it though, that doesn't sound like a bad idea though. Kind of like the New England blue board with plaster..

Very nice. What did you use to trim out the doors and windows? I notice smartside has their line of trim as well.

Also, might be a funny question, but when installing ceiling material that has an architectural element, in this case lines, do you run the lines the long way of the garage or the short way?

For trim we just used standard "quality" wood boards. We used L shaped trim pieces where we had really deep doorways.

Funny you should ask about the ceiling because we debated what to do. The room is a little over 14' wide and 35' long so we felt the lines should go width wise to make the room look wider rather than longer. We could have bought the ceiling pieces in 16' lengths which would have resulted in no seam in the middle but we felt that would have been more difficult to handle.

Did you use it?? We are considering for inside walls of our newer barn.
You resurrected a 8 year old thread, plus the OP hasn't signed in since 2016. I doubt he will answer!

I would start a new thread and ask the general population!
