I did a job for a friend last weekend, his neighbor, who was moving ended up giving me a 42" Vizio (Somewhat) Smart TV, the catch was that the sound didnt work, I googled it and that model has alot of problems, so anyway, I also have a 32" TV that I have just added Google Chromecast on and now I have it hooked to a surround sound, does anyone know how I can use the small TV to to send TV signal to the big TV? I tried a VGA cable between the two and that didnt work. I want both TV's to play the same ballgame/movie ect and use the sound of the small TV on the surround sound. Think I can get this to work??

Can you get an HDMI splitter and run one HDMI to each of the TV's from the Chromecast? But that would only split whatever is on the Chromecast. For OTA channels, just get a digital antenna and send the signal to each TV.

I think the splitter for HDMI only works over short distances, though.

You'd need some sort of video signal out from your tv. I can't say I've ever seen a tv with one as it kinda defeats the purpose. I'm going to say you need to tap the signal into your other tv then find a way to sync the video.

You need your TV to have a video out signal that you can then cable over to the bigger tv's video in slot. If your small TV doesn't have video out then you'll have to get a splitter and plug the chromecast into the giving end and both TVs into the receiving end.

What is the vga jack on the tv's for? I thought I could use that to feed the second (bigger)TV as a monitor? but I couldnt get it to work!! The Chromecast on the smaller TV is better as far as smart technology than the 5 or 6 options on the bigger TV, I think it has the smart capability for Netflix, Yahoo weather, Yahoo Finance, Hulu, Amazon. I will mess with it some more tomorrow. All of the HDMI ports on the TV are inputs... correct!!

I will look at it again tomorrow, thanks for the suggestions. The boss suggested to buy a new TV, I am determined to make this work:lol_hitti

The VGA jack on TVs is so u can input the video output of a computer onto the TV.

The small TV will need a video output for this to work as others have said

unless it's the Vizo M-series..... its probably not worth much if any at all...
.... fix the sound module or trash it.... its pretty simple to swap in the module in most cases.... or use it as your cheap web browsing monitor... from the bed?
42" TV are way too cheap if you are not looking at high end pic quality.... not gimmicky app functions...

Since you are using chromecast that hdmi plugs in from TV-A and wants the same picture Simultaneously broadcasting over to TV-B.... that dependents on if your TV-A have any HDMI or RCA or Component Video out functionality.... most likely NOT on lower end .... even on mid to high end TVs don't have these any more. Even my 8500 series Samsung cuts that out..... Last TV I see that offer these functions (video out) is the Sony XBR CRT TV 20+ years ago maybe......... No I don't think you can use a HDMI splitter in your case.

Yeah, I see why he was getting rid of it, it has a good picture. The new sound board is more than the TV is worth and there were plenty of problems listed for this tv. I am just messing around in my barn to see if I could get it to work, thats why I added the second TV (for sound) we had it laying around after my daughter upgraded hers. I am using the second TV to feed the surround sound receiver for sound, I want to get the same ballgame on both TV's, this is the mancave side of my barn (Both TV's are haging in my barn)
I was hooking up a mini split a couple weeks ago, the guys neighbor needed some electrical tape, I gave him a roll, about an hour later he offered the TV, I took it, it was free. I'll try the video out cable tomorrow.
Thks!!

Why not take it apart and see if you can figure out what exactly is wrong with the sound board. Maybe some cheap component broke and you can replace just that one component instead of the entire board.

A google search on the model number of the TV states they had plenty of problems with this one, everyone pretty much says to throw it away, the sound comes out of the main board and it was about $240, more than the value of the TV. The TV was free and its hanging in my barn, I'm just messing around and checking my different options. The sound doesnt have to work, I just want the same pic on both TV's where I can watch a ballgame or movie and use the small TV for the sound.

is this what you have ?
http://nationalservicealliance.com/visio/VIZIO-GV42L_HDTV.pdf

and are you sure it's not that you have the sound set to off from the audio control menu????

Could be a simple as a loose speaker wiring or broken speaker ?

Maybe that HDMI splitter proposed by catdog would work... I would get one from a place that have good return policy in case you needed to return it...

unless you are hooking one up in the bathroom.... I don't see the advantage of 2 TV in the same room. It's not the case of 32+42 = 74" TV thing.... besides that you are spending 2x the electricity (energy) for 1/2 the performance.

I was just thinking that there might be an easy fix.

My TV is currently having picture issues, where a ghost image of the screen is flickering up and down constantly, and an online fix is to cut one of the jumpers, instead of buying a new board. I was just thinking there might be a similar fix for your issue, or maybe a capacitor blew and you can replace only that capacitor instead of the entire board. Something of that nature.

Unfortunately for me, my TV is one of the ones that doesn't have that jumper, but I've been wanting to upgrade anyways, so I'm using it as an excuse to buy a new 55" 4k tv.

Wylie, it does have RCA Audio jacks on the back. I had the 32" tv over at my barn that I was going to hook up, then I did the job for the family friend, neighbor guy gives me 42" Vizio but sound doesnt work, the family friend gives me Pioneer surround sound, I am just messing around, playing, trying to get the sound to work. I will take it a part and see if its obvious, but there is a lot of issues with the TV. I have the 32" TV feeding the surround sound, I just want to get the 42" TV to play the same movie/ballgame as the 32". I have been all trough the Settings and setup menu, the 42" TV actually updated twice when I hooked up it up to my router and the internet but it didnt help either. The barn is a mile down the road from my house(This TV system will not be used that much) but, last year we had a little barn party watching a football game and eating/drinking and being merry!! I was just trying to have a better setup over there. I can get what I want from the small TV, I just want video only from the big TV.
Thanks for all the suggestions!!

check ebay, you can usually get a main board for around $35. have fixed a few that way. check Kent Lieu LCD repair, I bought his E-book (well worth the money) and get his email tips and have fixed several. believe he was an engineer at LG or something but he has all the knowledge on troubleshooting and fixing these on the super cheap.

If you dump it - recycle it. BestBuy used to give out $20 gift cards and only charge you $10 to recycle it or something like that.

BTW, on the vizio, there are settings for the sound, the guy who gave it to you may have accidently changed the default audio device or set it to secondary audio...if you have the manual you may want to look up how to get into the settings or do a factory reset. may just fix it on the cheap...usually when a board goes, either the digital or the power boards, you have other problems not just missing sound...

Sounds like your only option then is to try to use an HDMI splitter, since you don't care about trying to get sound out of the bigger tv.

Just for fun, have you tried plugging an external speaker into the "Audio Output" jacks on the bigger tv?

Probably will do that.

Yep, tried that

Yes, tried all that. I have turned on/off audio, did the factory reset. It even updated twice when I set my modem up to it. It could have more issues, I'm not sure

Thanks all!!
