I have Smartside panels on my pole barn with no osb under it (just nailed to the girts). Just nail it to the girts with galv siding nails. Don't nail to osb where there are no girts, those nails will more than likely back out, and no need to nail the **** out of it, just 16-24 in spacing.

I used SmartSide on my small shed, no problems yet. I screwed it to the studs with some good exterior screws. If I were to nail it, I'd probably use exterior siding nails.

I used LP smart siding on my interior of my insulated shop. Screwed right to the studs...16" on center. Mine were 4'x10' panel and screwed every 24" on the 10' length.

Nailing is also affected by whether the siding serves as shear panels. Had to get a building permit to replace old siding as it is "structural".
