Smartside Trim question

Can you put LP Smartside trim boards on top of Smartside siding?

The LP smartside video indicates to trim the corners first, then put the paneling up. Other videos I have seen puts the siding up first and then they put the trim over it on the corners.

Does it matter? It's going to be hard to put the paneling up around the windows if trim can't go on the paneling.

The instructions show both ways. But with panel siding (vs lap) probably everyone would put the trim on top.

That's what I thought. I just checked directions and you are right. Their videos show trim going on first though. Odd.

Yeah, it doesnt make sense. You want a nice deep shadowline from your trim, burying half of it in the siding doesn't make sense. On lap siding you need to pack out the trim with most of the thin boards they have as well. Putting it on top is a caulking mess.

Kind of unrelated. I am building a pole building and am thinking about smartsideing it with the panels. The directions say to put house wrap under the smartside. Is this really needed?

Have you fully sheathed the pole barn with OSB or ply? Most polebarn are designed to use metal not only for a weather barrier but functions as a shear web and gives the building good racking resistance.

As far as the house wrap, all lap siding needs some wrap, either tyvek of building paper. No lap siding is water proof against wind driven water. Also look up tyvek failures, I have seen many cases of saturated OSB do to the pores of the "breathable" wraps clogging over time and a lake of a drying air space(rain screen). Many good builders are going back to a good d-226 building paper(other grades are cheap junk) with a rain screen over it and then the siding.

There are some new wraps that have a texture that claim to form a rain screen but are expensive and I has yet to been seen if the small micro gaps are as effective as the traditional rain screens.
