Well I have hit snag with lumber yard that I was ordering all my LP Smart Side siding and trim boards. But now they are directing me towards Smart Strand products. Is Smart Strand made by LP or is this just different product? It’s cheaper than SmartSide but now wanting me change gears. Googling SmartStrand but nothing, McCoys email me back saying it is LP product but also said not made out of OSB. They didnt provide info what it is made out of. So my next question was does it carry same warranty at SmartSide 5/50? I know try warranty something with company as big as LP. Google shows nothing other than carpet, searching SmartStrand

The only place I could find Smart Strand siding is on McCoy’s website. The website says it is an LP product. The pictures on the McCoy’s website look just like Smartside.

I cannot find any Smart Strand product on the LP website. I wonder if it is McCoy’s name for grade B Smartside siding, or something like that?

Fiber based version of Smartside was discontinued. The strand based version is alive and still made.

Here in Minnesota we can get actual Smartside siding for a little bit less than what the Smart Strand siding sells for. I wonder if it is really Smartside siding that they are just abbreviating and using strand to mean the strand based product vs the discontinued fiber based product? I bet if you look at the back of the siding there is either a sticker, or printing, that says Smartside.

I’d call LP and find out what the material really is and whether its suitable for how you will use it. It’ll be a lot easier to find out now than later.

I have tried that but nothing, found and signed up on LP’s FB page sent them message. What throws up red flag for me is that I can find product sheets for SmartSide but nothing on SmartStrand. But like reader is saying maybe it’s same thing. Either one of these carriers the 5/50 warranties. But I have place my order, which take about two weeks. For some reason no lumber yards around here carries all their products, just lap siding and dang trim that’s 5/8 thick. Why is engineer product that’s shown to be 3/4 but only 5/8? Oh well I pulled trigger, I’m ready to move on with my 1000sq ft retirement project

The more I think about this the more I am certain that someone at McCoy's just abbreviated Smartside as Smart in their computer system. The strand is there to identify the strand version of Smartside versus the fiber version of Smartside that was discontinued in 2020.

I agree with this. Might be easiest just to look at the actual product in the lumber yard to make sure everyone is on the same page but I’m guessing reader is correct.

The trim should come in three thicknesses… 5/8”, 3/4” (1x) and a full 1” (5/4x). Don’t waste your time with the 5/8”.

Hate to throw a monkey wrench in the equation, but have you considered Hardie? When wood prices skyrocketed in 2020-2021, Hardie turned out to be much cheaper. Pre-pandemic it was much more expensive. As a concrete product, you never have to worry about rot.
BTW, I am very happy with my choice.

Smart Side is much easier to handle and work with imho.

For those with inquiring minds, LP said that SmartSide has a stranded substrate. So what McCoys is selling is SmartSide, just they word it differently. LP went to their website just check so all is good. I do feel better about this
