I know exactly what your saying. Almost everything that comes from HF that has any rubber in it smells like that- it's awful.

My theory is that the Chinese are disposing of their toxic waste by molding it into their rubber products, then shipping it overseas to HF and WalMart.

One of the worst smelling objects I've ever smelt in my life was a racket ball. They come in a little can with a snap cover lid. I'm sure glad there's a sealed container for them. :eek2:

most lower end products like that are made black so they can use just about any recycled material they want to.
I would not be suprised if they used something that was used in contact with some chemical or used old shredded tires

All HF stuff has that smell to it...funk of China. It's aweful.

Anyone know where I can get a lead paint test kit? I can guarantee I'd find at least one product at HF that contains lead paint.

What you were smelling was the sweat from the worker who made that wheel chock in one of the Chicom slave labor camps.

10 year olds sweat?

Heck yeah they sweat; 'specally if someone is holding a gun or stick to their head; telling them to crank out more of those smelly wheel chocks per hour or they will be placed on the ' extermination list...:shocking:

In the '80s, my dad went to China to help set up the Beijing Jeep plant. He lived there for three months.

The foot locker he took over, the photo albums and the other stuff in the foot locker STILL stink. "Funk of China" is no joke. He said the smell could have knocked you over.

They've supposedly cleaned up a lot for the olympics, but I gotta think that when you mold rubber or plastic, you're trapping that smell in it.

What I want to know is how come my screwdriver drawer stinks?

I've never WANTED to smell anything like a wheel chock.
But, yes, funniest thread in a long time... except the stuff about hazardous waste and slave labour is probably much to close to the truth.

Slave labor isn't very PC. They prefer to be called "involuntarily employed".

ever wonder what happens to the plastic that comes from old car batteries?

it gets ground into small bits and is sold as 'flake' and is added as recycled material content to new plastic molded parts.
I can tell you that it effects the strenth of the new product and I had to put a stop to the use of it at one place I worked at because of that. but it was cheap...

This product has a warning on the back "this brass portions of this product contain lead. A chemical know to the state of california to cause cancer..."
Close enough?

Has anyone used these smelly wheel chocks?

I bought a pair of gray colored welding gloves to use with my wood stove from them that I had to leave outside in the garage for 3 to 4 months before the smell went away. My wife wouldn't let them in the house and doesn't want me buying any more gloves from them.

Maybe I'll buy a set for the bedroom. I'll keep em under the bed, it might disguise the stench of my ***-gas and keep the bed from rolling around the room during Bim-Bam.

This joke just came to mind: What do you do with 365 used condoms? Melt them down, form the melted rubber into a tire and call it a "Goodyear."

My guess that the smell in HF is some kind of cosmoline type stuff to prevent rust on the boat ride from China to the US. I also think some of the smell is the cheap stuff off gassing. Wonder how healthy it would be to work in a store and breath that all day long? Sometimes I get a headache after going in there.
