Such is life his patent was filed on May 2, 1969 making it vintage but alas it was granted on June 1, 1971. (Starting in 2020 it will be 1970 and before).

Finding any information about his life was very hard so I will try my best here.
Smith Kyser was born on Dec. the 8th 1902 (no location info.) and he died on the 14th of Feb., 1972 in Lapeer, Michigan.

His wife Lois M. Kyser born on March 10th ,1906 and date of death on Sept., 27th, 1995. in Ionia, Michigan. Both buried at the Saranac Cemetery, Saranac, Ionia County, Michigan.

Interesting that he had three patents, one for a child's toy, one for a Magnetic Retrieving tool, and one for a piston ring groove cleaner tool.

The Magnetic tool is marked New Britain, MH-12 USA. His patents suggests that he had the application filed by Aircraft Specialties, Inc., Lapeer, Mi. Interesting that I found it in a 1958 catalog, wonder why the long delay of the patent date of 1969 ?

Greg Shaw - President - SE Tools said:
All the tools you mentioned were built for Indestro by Aircraft Specialties (the OEM) and some form of them are still being manufactured here in Lapeer today. Certainly not in the exact configuration or with the same volumes of those days. The #80 carbon scraper is still produced on the same tooling that was used in the 1940s so is virtually identical to the one you have.

The recent acquisition of a screw starter with Aircraft Specialties markings got me wondering if Smith Kyser was the inventor of that tool as well. It turns out that he didn’t invent the screw starter for slotted screws but he did invent a screw starter for Phillips screws.
