smoke damage

I need some ideas on my ceiling, it is painted drywall and it was smoke damaged 10 yrs ago.I have painted kills over many times and it still comes back looking dingy, what would be a good material to just cover it over with?
just a working garage

I have been there and done that. I have tried Kilz stain blocker, smoke damage can be tough. the quickest and easiest way I have found is furring strips and board over it. Youre only lowering the ceiling 1 1/4" to 1 1/2".

They also make 1/4" drywall, if you do not have a smoke smell to get rid of, you can put this directly over your drywall ceiling. Everytime I have used Kilz, it has worked well for me. Have you tried the oil based, the fumes are really bad, but it will cover just about anything.

Since its a garage, maybe a metal ceiling?

Kilz and Zinsser - there is water based and also oil based. At work, all we use is oil based. Its not as easy for clean up and you get a good contact buzz from rolling it on, but its a sure thing for sealing smells and stains.

If that doesn't work, I'd say heck with it, and go right over the existing drywall with 1/4" drywall. No furring strips or anything.

1/4 on the sidewalls might be ok, but I would not use it on the ceiling as it tends to sag over time. It is too heavy to lay flat. Maybe if you glued and screwed it without furring strips. Whats above the ceiling attic or second floor?, if 2nd floor rip the old down and do it right.

Agree!! Get the oil based stuff and not the latex water clean up stuff

If you want to paint it, I'd recommend Kilz oil-baased first followed by top coating it with regular paint.

Have you considered just covering up the drywall with some metal siding ? Once it's up, you're done and no need to worry about it again.

The old glue and screw trick would work but not knowing what the ceiling is I was hesitant to recommend it. If it's trusses they may not be rated for what's there already.

Just laminate it with 3/8" rock. If you screw it correctly (8" on the edges and 12" in the middle) it wont sag. You can always add more screws.

After doing my shop ceiling, I'd have to go with metal. Shoot a s reward and you're done. No 3 coats of the seams, sanding, primer, then paint. Easy, quick, done.

I would go with Kilz Original (not the latex stuff) . I've used it in a house that had a cat lady that smoked and it worked great. Thin it a bit and spray with a HF $10 purple gun - works great!

thanks for the ideas ,I think going with the metal is a good idea can't take out the old drywall cause the blown in insulation

It is a shellac based primer that requires denatured alcohol for cleanup. This stuff will do the job, but it's not cheap - $42 range for a gallon

Dries really quick and is also really easy to sand
