Are smoke detectors advised?
My shop is located 50 feet from the house. I don't store any flammables except what is in my riding mower and some spray cans of paint, WD-40 etc. No welding or grinding inside, all electric is code.
Shop is stick built and well insulated.
I don't have a smart phone or internet to the shop; I am just asking about a simple battery powered smoke detector. Could I even hear it if it went off?

I’m not sure on the distance but there are some that wirelessly communicate with each other. It would be worth a try. And I highly recommend having a few good quality fire extinguishers both in the house in the shop. And preferably not the cheap Home Depot, Lowe’s, Walmart ones. Just my humble opinion it’s worth what you paid for it

I know you just asked about the simple smoke detectors but I will add a little to your thoughts. Simplisafe alarms have a bunch of different sensors available including smoke. They also have an extra loud alarm noise maker available. I forget the db rating on the noise but it is loud and you could probably even mount it outside under a roof overhang. If you have any thoughts about an alarm system anyway, they can help.

Would you know if there's a fire starting in the shop while your in there? If not I guess smoke detectors would be a good idea. Life saving equipment. Unfortunately my shop isn't big enough to have a fire and me not to notice. I also run cars, lawn equipment and motorcycles in there so a smoke detector would be going off more often than not.

For 20 bucks you can get a ten year lithium battery smoke detector. Why not get one?

I have a two storey garage, one smoke detector per storey, one CO2 detector downstairs and three fire extinguishers. Because why not.

In a shop, use a heat detector. Welding, torch cutting, even cutting lumber, or firing up a smoky truck will likely set a regular smoke alarm off.
