Smokey Mr. Heater?

Just installed a lpg Mr. Heater 45,000 btu hanging Maxx unit in the shop. Upon intially firing it up, it got downright hazy in the shop after running for about twenty minutes to the point where I had to shut it down and open the doors to vent it out.

After triple checking everything, all is properly hooked up and vented. So the question is, is this normal with the heaters intial run? I know some heaters will smoke a little when they are first fired up. All input appreciate it.

P.S. I am NOT impressed with the quality of this unit. I won't be getting another one.

Is it soot or smoke? Any odor? Are you sure you got the right model for the type of fuel Propane vs. Natural Gas?

Any new heater just out of the box has a coating that will burn off when its first started up. It is so the unit won't rust when its in the warehouse.

Something doesn't sound right. When I hooked up my heater (BeaconMorris), not a puff of smoke could be found. Better check into this, before letting it run with the doors closed.

Its not visibly smoking, its just after running for awhile the shop became visibly hazy and had kind of an "exhaust" smell. Almost as if it were not venting properly, although it is. I do have the lpg model, and no soot is evident.

I can say, that after the initial run that caused the need to vent, I started it up again and let it run for awhile and while some haze/odor was once again present, it was MUCH less than what occured with the intial burn. I was just assuming that (as mike mentioned) there was some protective coating burning off, although what I experienced seemed excessive.

I've got it running now and will check it again in a couple of hours, but now I'm wondering if I shouldn't get a carbon dioxide meter.....

Thanks for all your thoughts so far.

Just like he said....... It is the protective coating that is on the heater so it doesn't rust while in the warehouse...

If you want to check the carbonation of your soda, then get a carbon dioxide meter.:lol_hitti

I think that if you are worried about that which is odorless and tasteless, carbon monoxide, that it makes sense to purchase a detector.

Ooops, meant carbon MONoxide

At this point I really think its just the protective coating burning off, as it seems pretty much non-existant at this point. I've never experienced it so thick and noxious before though....bleah.

I have the 75k btu version of the Mr Heater Big Maxx. When I first fired mine up, it did initially put off a little "haze. It did not get that bad, but you could really smell the paint and/or protective coating burning off. I believe it did mention in the manual that you should expect this. I have had mine for a couple months now and am loving it......

Hey Scooter, the noise is not too bad. I guess it is about what I expected. I don't have to speak up when it is running. You're timing in getting it was good with this weather now! Now get that baby installed

I used to install gas and wood stoves for a living.

The haze is most likely the paint curing, and the oils burning off....not very good for you.

Let the unit run on high for a hour or two with the door open.
