Ok I have been busy getting ready for my wedding on Saturday. And I haven't had any shop time. But I just walked out there and there lays a snake skin shed. I haven't seen the snake yet, and I don't really want to. In all honesty I have a fear of them. I'm checking out where he could be hidden. Now, what can I do to get rid of him and keep others away??

Thanks,
Chris

First determine from the skin what kind of snake it is. If it is a good one, feed him to be sure he never leaves. A good snake makes a fantastic mousetrap.

moth balls. Most critters hate them, and non-toxic. Drives them away instead of killing them somewhere they stink up the joint.

Don't waste money on snake repellents. They don't work.

Do buy mouse traps/bait to get rid of any rodents you might have. Those are food for and will attract snakes besides being destructive and carrying disease on their own. Without food snakes wouldn't be interested in your space other than as a temporary refuge.

There are glue traps with will work for both the snake and the mice but they are pretty cruel as far as trap devices. Hope this helps.

I couldn't tell ya lol. I just don't want to stick my hand in a box and then bam. Plus right now, my walls are open with just insulation. So my guess is he could be hiding in the walls somewhere. Here's a couple of pictures. The only snake around here that are posinous are copperheads. At least I think. Plus with two dogs running around. I don't want to see the. Get bit either.

I've found a couple of skins in the in laws basement but never seen the snake. More than likely you won't either. When the mice are gone he will leave.

I wouldn't give it much thought. It looks *really* small from the photo on the drum head.

Irrational fears are hard to put away -- that's why they're irrational -- but this frankly looks like nuthin' to give another moment to.

I live in the city (or at least in a close-in suburb) and I find a snakeskin or two every summer, but in a dozen years I've seen one foot-long harmless snake. My best guess is that's what you have here, too. Probably a garter snake.

I am NOT one of the kill-it-just-to-be-safe crowd. Snakes work hard not to be seen, the vast majority are harmless, and they do a great job hunting vermin. Try not to randomly kill them, if you can.

Here are some of the snakes in Ohio.

Hey, I'll mail my cat out to you. The ******* catches snakes and brings them into the house to play with them.

dont worry about the dogs, they have natural instinct to steer clear of snakes.

being in ohio, you have no worries of poisonous snakes. the odds of your snake skin originated from a poisonous snake is very slim, and you will honestly probably never see who it came from.

take a look around your shop and look for mouse dropping. if you see some, deal with the mice. move the dog food or what ever they may be eating out of that area, or put it in large tupperware containers with snap on lids. the mice will leave if there is no food. once the mice leave, the snake will follow, again no food.

moral of the story - no need to worry about the snake, hes more afraid of you than you are of him.

Looks like a copper mouth water rattler. Honey Badger don't care, also known as Chuck Norris' kitty.

from the skin markings and the shape of the head it looks like it belongs to the rat snake family. no worries about venom there. he is doing you a favor by snacking on rodents. leave him be

By the length and the shed being so skinny i would doubt it is poisonous but the only good snake is a dead snake

Snakes don't ususally hang around too long. they usually move around. After it shed it's skin, it probably left. it has to have food and if there isn't any there, they'll leave.

If you can get rid of the food supply, they will usually go away. A cat is really good at this as mine is always dragging up moles and mice. Knock on wood, I haven't seen a snake in several years. But, if all else fails, take Bob's advice....

Before you worry about the snake, check your yard for mice, rats, rabbits, squirrels and other small prey. Repel them and the snakes will go too.

It's all about the food chain.

+1 on removing the resource that's attracting the snake.

According to the Ohio DNR, y'all have 3 venomous (not poisonous) snakes. Everyone should learn to ID the venomous snakes in their area.

Northern Copperhead
Eastern Massauga
Timber Rattlesnake

If it makes you feel better, I spent the better part of the last two summers as an ornithologist tramping through head-high grass and brush piles for 6 hours every single day, and despite being in prime habitat, I saw a grand total of 2 timber rattlesnakes (one per season, both on roads) and a half dozen water moccasins (3 of those in one day in superb water moccasin habitat).

Just watch where you put your hands (good advice for all sorts of creepy crawlies.

If you want to go the repellant route, call Barry at The Bug Clinic. 800-433-1128. He can hook you up and won't seel you snake oil in the process.

I can't stand snakes either, but large glue boards seem to work well.

Indians of the South West said that the Rattlesnake Round-ups were bad medicine. How right they were.

When the snake population was reduced the mouse population increased and the mice carried a plague called Hanta Virus (I'm not sure I spelled it correctly). You bleedout internally with kidney failure etcetera. Nasty death.

You can catch hanta just by breathing mouse urine.

Hanta has now been found all over the USA.

We now have this new plague thanks to pansy asses being affraid of snakes.

That is the skin of a black rat snake..harmless.
As far as repellent, there is none.Snakes don't give a **** about moth balls, sprays or any kind of repellent. It probably just wandered through, looking for food or a warm place to hide. He'll roll out on the next warm day or when he's hungry.

Just get through the wedding this week and you'll be fine. Wedding rings are great snake repellant and after you say "I do" she will probably never come near your snake again.
