Very funny thread indeed! I don't though understand the big popularity in killing them? They are not going to hurt you unless you get too close and they are good animals to have around albeit not inside the shop. Even if we had venomous snakes in CT. I wouldn't kill one if I came across it. Just leave it be and it will be on it's way sooner than later. If you have a rodent problem then get rid of those varmints and the snakes will go elsewhere looking for a meal instead. Just don't see the need to kill everything in sight just because I don't like it. Just my opinion and I am not preaching just wish guy's would think a second before blasting anything they don't care for.

Thats what I'm in agreement with. They do way more good than harm. They serve a very important purpose in life, and in the eco system. If you kill all the snakes, you will have all kinds of rodent and other small animal infestation.
I don't like have them surprise me, but I don't kill them if I come across one. I will relocate them someplace away from my barn (shop) and usually don't see them again.

Guys, I'm ROLLIN' out here!!! This is the funniest thread I've read on here in a long time!! I can't believe some of the responses you guys have. You've all become so citified that you've lost any connection to the natural world you live in! I don't particularly LIKE snakes either, but whenever one comes around he's the subject of some interest and inquisitiveness by my kids and grandkids. I teach them to be respectful and keep their distance and once the thrill is gone I'll dispose of him, usually alive. I'm not going to flee the county, or burn down/blow up my shop over him.

The way some of you guys are acting though, your Grandmother would be embarrassed. And, your Grandfather would be kicking your **** all over the barnyard for being afraid of a lil 'ol snake! Come on guys grow a pair!!!

(and remember, they were here before we were!)

Now, if the Alien showed up in my shop, that'd be a different story!!!

Back in Junior High, we lived next to a bayou and I'd spend time there catching snakes. Became real familiar with the different species. Most were harmless but I did catch a few copperheads and moccasins. I never got bit but I came close one time.

Nearly 40 years later, I have a few simple rules:
venomous = dead
small non-venomous = leave it be
large non-venomous = relocate to the country

Around here I'm more worried about Brown Recluse spiders. They love to hide in small dark places. Any time I reach for the work gloves I drop them on the floor and step on them - just in case. They're not deadly, but they can cause a large, nasty wound that takes months to heal.
