snakes in garage

I everybody, my name is Woody and been lurking for some time. Sorry for not posting before, but I have come up with a problem that needs to be addressed. The other day when returning home I hit my garage door opener and just caught sight of a snake laying against my door. Of course when it went open, it took santuary in my garage. It is just a common garter snake, but my concern is that I couldn't get to it in time and lost sight of it. What do any of you have for ideas of keeping them from entering the garage and or for ridding them once they have made their way in. I am keeping my eyes peeled hoping to catch sight of it. I doubt that it made its way out, but can only hope that it did. Hate to see this become a trend. Have had this garage up now for 13 years in my back yard and the door opens into the alley. I live in the woods, and the general rule of thumb is that whatever gets into the garage will get out if you leave the door open. If you have mice in the garage, the snake will make short order of them. If you don't have mice in the garage, then the snake will move onto greener pastures, where he will find the meal that he is looking for. Just remember that the little snake is in all probability more afraid of you than you are supposed to be of him. When they can find there way out, they always leave.

Most places have snake catchers with the local council or contacts for them. Just be lucky and thankful it is not poisinous. I had a 4 Foot brown here this summer and they can be nasty.

Once I went into my garage at night and heard something at my foot. It was almost dark with no lights and as I looked down I saw the last 5 or 6 inches of a large( they get to 6 feet long here in north carolina) rat snake go OVER MY FRIGGIN SHOE....I left quicker than he did and I didnt go back again when I couldnt see the floor,,,,,,,As far as your snake,,,,put a cat out there for a few days and the cat will kill it or chase it away...

After sleeping on the problem, I have come to a conclusion as to how best to remove the snake. Catch a field mouse, then tie a string to its tail, and let it loose in the garage. When the snake sees the mouse, it will get into a striking pose. When you see this, pull on the string and drag the mouse out slowly. The snake will follow. When you have both the mouse and the snake outside of the garage, let the snake catch the mouse and swallow it. Then you can drag the snake to where ever you want to relocate it. Problem solved.

Funny this should come up. My son was in the garage showing one of his buddies his fishing gear a couple of days ago. The buddy looks down and says "is that real?" My son says is what real> The kid points to the ground and there was a reattle snake right where the garage door meets the concrete. My son took out of there like a bat our of **ll and came running in the house. I saw the snake the next day and took his head off with a shovel. Guess thats part of living in Texas. Damn never thought that would happen.

I had a whole next of garters under a deck last year. Putting a whole box of moth balls under there seemed to fix the issue. This deck was the entrance to our home daycare so I was asked to fix the situation quickly.

I think I can keep the Snakes out. It is the Red Backs ( Spiders ) that worry me. My Shed is full of the them and I have to spray them monthly.

Thanks for all the great posts. Obviously a pretty common problem. The moth balls will be tried. I have seen what a snake does in a garden shed and it is a mess. It is amazing how much **** they produce and it doesn't clean up all that easy.We leave them alone to take care of bugs in the yard and garden, but now they are invading my space. Not long ago I was rooting around in a buddies garage looking at parts he had stashed that he wanted to sell. As I was checking the parts out he mentioned that he had a brown recluse problem and I should be careful. This was being done with flashlight and alcohol and didn't take me long to finish my business up after he mentioned that. But it doesn't bother him, he lets the reside there. Any more suggestions let me know, haven't seen him since he entered my world, Woody

Dude, OZ is the most dangerous place I have ever visited...and the red backs are everywhere and much bigger / more dealy than our black widow...scared the hell out of me.
The wife and I rented a "beach front" place in Port Douglas ( northeastern Queenland). We had box jellyfish and Tar trees ( sign said " Tar Trees, Acidic, will burn your skin) to fight to get into the water only to see crocs swimming about 100 yeards off shore....you guys know how to live....wish I was still there !!!!!!

I'd gladly trade garder snakes for the black widows I'm dealing with. I've killed at least 10 this spring. They seem to be in/under/behind everything this year.

SNAKES ON PLAIN, now that is funny s---t!!! I am very glad to have it be a common snake, we have the rattlers within the area, but not that immediate, also some brown recluse and black widows. The black widows we have come across we believe were brought in with construction materials as they were found in lumber on new construction sights. Have even come across a baby rattler once and that was enough. I here they can be very dangerous as they cannot control the amount of poison they eject. Been an interesting thread, hope to hear more. Am putting moth balls in the garage by the door now so that maybe this doesn't continue. Not scare of them but do not like the mess they can make. On the other hand it would help control the numerous insects and spiders that are also in the garage. I am sure with summer coming on more activity out there will keep their curiosity down some. Now everybody get back in their garages now, Woody

I have the names and the ships they came on. he stole a Horse and she stole a loaf of bread.

Sorry off topic from the Snakes. I have a Mob of Kangaroos on the property now and a few of them look pretty mean. A mate lost his dog to one a while ago as it grabbed the dog round the neck with its top feet and dragged into the water to drown the dog.

I have snakes and black widows. No big deal. I've seen some pretty big snakes this year, so I assume they are keeping the rodents down.

It's the wasps that are driving me nuts. Those and the alligator lizard that ran across my hand as I was reaching into a drawer. It gave me the heebie-jeebies.

I'm glad I live in an area where there is absolutly no problems with any pests what so ever, No poisonous spiders, snakes, bugs of any sorts, the only remote problem is hornets, but other then those little chickens I live in a spot pest free, and am LOVING it, from what I have heard about OZ and texas and such.

Sorry they are Kangaroos in your photo as Wallabies do not mix in mobs or groups like Kangaroos do. Wallabies are a lot darker and genrally do not like to be in areas where people are.

I see a few Wallabies here but usaul they want to get away. Not like the Roos that will stop and watch you.

And I kid you not that story is true. I have heard that Roos often do this to Dogs.

That's because it's too freaking cold up there to support any form of life!

No Roos here, but we have coyotes that will lure domestic dogs out to kill and eat them. Cougars, too. A friend a few miles up the road lost a dog to one. I didn't believe it until I went over there and saw the tracks.

We have Dingos, The native Dog here and they make a mess of the Roos and people if they get a chance.

People also say we have Cougars and Pumas in the wild here. We have the odd item on the News every so often about them. Some blame the US troops that came here in WW2 and say they left there mascots behind to roam free.

I got a couple of true snake stories to add, A friend who lives in virginia in the woods reached up to open a kitchen cabinet and there he saw a coperhead coiled and ready to strike. He killed it . I warned him before that he needed to check around for ways snakes could come in but he didnt.. Another time a woman who works with the wife started to replant a flower from a local home depot type store and when she pulled it out of the container it came in three little coperheads raised their heads up out of the pot. She took pictures to prove it. Now that is scary

Another true snake story--we left the house doors open while we were moving boxes and stuff into the house from my daughters move out of university. Next day, I come inside from mowing and see a 3 ft black rat snake in front of the refrigerator inside the house. This was 3 days ago, on Sunday.

He got into the undercabinet trim-framing next to the refrigerator and we haven't seen him since. There's a water line to the refrigerator; I think the took off through the penetration into the crawl space for the water line and he's down there now.

I'm still walking around the house at night with a big spotlight and looking under things.
