The ag supply stores here sell sulfur by the bag as snake repellent. Some of our population swear a snake will not crawl over sulfur.

I did a quick Google search and found that this is not true, although I had hoped that it was. Here is the link..... I have no idea what is in the product that they are selling for a snake repellent, but I find it interesting that it can't be shipped to a few states. I wonder why that is?

Ooo, that was BAD. Our Moderator should consider giving some PUNishment for that!

c.

Please don't ban me - I love this place!
Puns are in my blood & in my genes, handed down from my grandfather (rest his soul) to my father, to me. My kids do it a little bit, my wife's genes may have weakened them.

On the critters in garages stories: my dad was working under the car one evening when he saw a parade consisting of momma skunk, three babies and our stupid cat bringing up the rear. He carefully and quietly grabbed the cat and tiptoed out of the garage.

heres my last snake story/ Soon after iIgot married I got up one night and there on the floor not 3 feet from our bed was a 2 foot black snake. It came in the window screen. I hollered out to the wife and said"honey dont get out of bed, theres a snake on the floor" I knew then I had married a good woman. She started screaming to the LORD JESUS asking for his help and I quickly killed it with a broom....She didnt say any bad words at all

I never read the entire label to see if they put something other than sulfur in it. Next time I'm down there, I'll try to remember to do so.

Howdy to all the critter wranglers in their garages. Have found out in the last week that there was a snake repellent that can be sprinkled around any areas you do not wish to give access to the snakes. It has to be applied again after any rain or watering of the yard.
Been away from the computer for several days due to overtime, like the money, hate the dead on my *** feeling when I get home. Haven't hardly been in the garage other then to get my motorcyle out to ride to and from work. No new sightings.
Have also had several possum encounters. Need to buy better pellet gun or upgrade to 22. Have now killed 4 by kniving. Good ol hand to hand for these pests. Not much shaking otherwise, thanks for the replys at this time, Woody

I guess I have a couple more replys to make.
I am not scared of my garter snake population. Would have gladly picked it up bare handed if I could have gotten to him in time. It crawled into a spot and I have no idea where he went to. The problem I originally listed was I don't want them in the garage because of their mess from waste. It does smell and accumulate when they can't be controlled in my garage. My garage is a great place to hide them in because of years of wrenching on bikes and accumulating. Boxes of parts work benches, tire rack, display cases, etc. I only wish to keep them in the yard and garden for the insect control they are so appreciated for.

I have Blue Racers around my pole barn that get to 6' long. They are supposed to be aggressive and while non-venomous, their bites are painful. They can't get in the pole barn because of the way the floor was poured, but they could get in an open door. Does the snake repellant work?

I don't want to "eliminate" them if I don't have to, but last night there was one about 10 feet from the door. Plus I have an 8 year old nephew that likes to get close to critters.

My wife tolerates my dog (he's a good dog, he's just, well, a dog) purely because he roams the yard and in theory should chase any critters away. Haven't seen anything since we got him.

Doesn't mean I don't worry about running across something (snakes, mainly) in my crawlspace. :scared:

My rule is if it's harmless leave it alone. Leave the door open and it will leave eventually. We have species of poisonous snakes here in Florida. I have taught my wife and son what they look like. Although two of thee 6 are found in the northern part of the state. In our area we mainly get pigmy rattlers, eastern diamond backs ( saw a monster a few weeks ago crossing the road. bout a 6-7 footer), water mocs, and your basic coral snake. Saw my first pigmy about 6 months ago. Was in the garage. I caught it with a pair of plyers to show the kid. Haven't seen a coral in many months. But we have tons of black racers, indgos, rat snakes of all colors, and a ring neck that I have just started seeing.

I'll add one funny story. I was helping my younger sister clean out her tack room in her stable several years ago. It was early spring. Still relativley cool but sunny. She went to reach for a "coil of rope". Just before she picked it up I realized it was a 4-5 foot brown rat snake. She picked it up, dropped the snake, ran one way and the snake the other. I naturally stood there laughing my a$$ off .... LOL

I had a Tiger snake here this last Summer. Now that I can tell you was a dangerous thing. It got the sharp end of the shovel very quickly.

As for those suggesting you handle them. FORGET IT and leave it for the specialists and I say that even if they are no poisonous as they still bite.

Used to live in KCMO area. We had a couple of Black snakes. One was 6 or maybe even 7 feet long and looked to be almost as big around as my wrist. They eat voles, mice, and other pests, but also like baby robins and song birds. When scared they "play possum" and are therefore easy to chop up if you are so inclined.

If they just did not always catch me by surprise and therefore "frighten the wits" (ie scare the ****) out of me, I think they would make good mousers, and would not mind having them around, because they do go after little rodents.

You sons of...

I read this thread. Haven't seen a snake in 3 years on my property. Then, all the sudden, dog goes nuts barking at my wife's hydrangea outside. I go poking around to see what critter comes out (thinking chipmunk, squirrel, or cat) and see a 5' blacksnake.

Thanks for nothing..

Mothballs do seem to work, and the smell goes away after a few days. I have used the snake away but it gets expensive. Malathion, an insect spray does a pretty good job of keeping them out of the yard.

If you spray around the garage with it leave an opening for the snake to get out. It seems that they don't like to cross where you have sprayed it. On the plus side the spray gets rid of the bugs and if there is no food for the snakes they will go to the neighbors.

Marty

PS. When we first moved to Nebraska my wife was petrified of them, now she just calls for me or my sun to get rid of it....

Opened the garage one night to put the bike away & there was a VERY large snake laying coiled up next to it. I took two steps & covered about 25ft. Then I stopped & decided to have a closer look as it was skulking off under my Galaxie. It was only a gopher snake but it was a VERY LARGE gopher snake.. like 8 damn feet & as thick as my arm.
My usual reaction is to step away because we also have Mojave Greens & those buggers will mess you up BIG time..

a few months later I was telling a friend who has animals for the movie industry & found out that was about as big as gopher snakes ever get & it was worth quite a bit of $$$$

Caught a youngin one day & put it in an old fishtank to show my kid when she got home from school.. all I got was "oh" & she wandered off...
