Tried to search for this but with snap in the search it's pretty tough.....
Was trying to replace the snaps on my snowmobile seat cover today, found my dads old snap kit without a tool to crimp them. Not sure what he used back in the day and was looking for suggestions. Not sure the manual punch would work very well in this situation. Might use a plier type more than I think once I had one. Some of the pliers look pretty flimsy tho. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Depending on how far from the edge of fabric, Hobby Lobby, Joann's, Michaels and the like of craft stores carry what you are describing as a plier design. They should also have a punch & anvil set. Careful as the standard snaps are plated steel and may rust. Might have to search for brass.

Places that do boat covers have the snap tool that you need. They are expensive and each size has to have a set of die's to fit the snaps you are using. Take the cover to a boat cover place and they should be able to fix you up for very little money. This time of year they are not busy so they should welcome you. Most boats have already been winterized and now employees are just doing inventory and busy work to stay busy. The part on the snowmobile are usually held on by a pop-rivet and they can come loose. Just pop rivet them again and use a backer washer inside to secure them.
