In the market for some ****-On 1/2 drive, semi deep, 12pt SAE sockets for my field kit at work. I see them listed in the Cat and online as individual purchase which is awesome for me.

Funny thing is, they list socket length as the same as the regular shallow sockets mmmm  The 3/8 sockets are both 1 1/2 long but a $6 price hike for the semi.

Anybody on these boards have these sockets? If so, are they longer in reality? Like 1/2 between the shallow & deep?

Pics pics pics.

Semi-deep: https://store.snapon.com/Semi-Deep-inches-Socket-Semi-Deep-1-12-pt--P746152.aspx

Shallow: https://store.snapon.com/Shallow-inches-chrome-Socket-Shallow-1-12-Point-P632136.aspx

According to these dimensions for a 1" socket, the semi-deep is 5/16" longer than the shallow. The bolt clearance depth is also longer with the semi-deep.

Yeah I noticed 11/16 and up are longer but not long enough to be semi deep.

3/8 deep is 3.24"
3/8 shallow is 1.5"

I would have thought the whole kit would have been 2.25" long across the board. The deep set are the same from little to large.

If anyone has pics to compare. Would appreciate it.

Shallow 3/8 - 1 1/8 = $299.95
Semi 3/8 - 1 1/8 = $390.30

semi deep 3/8 is 38mm by defnition (deep is 75mm)

You must mean "Snap-on." I'm sure you hit that C key by accident.

Na I meant ****-on. I usually say Tw@t-on but I didn't wanna be vulgar.

38mm yes for the shallows or 1 1/2 The deeps are 3 1/4 according to my book. Although I don't have it in front of me at the moment.

I would have went for a full 7/8 difference. Half way between.

Need to see some pics before I part with my $$

It's surprisingly difficult to find any "real world" photos/descriptions of these sockets to prove or disprove the catalog's specifications.

I just can't imagine why the 3/8" to 5/8" "semi-deep" sockets would exist at all if they're the same length as the shallow sockets. Unless I'm missing something, they would basically be the same sockets.

The larger sizes are at least longer than the shallows, but only by about a quarter inch, and I can't see buying any of those aside from maybe for a one-off application that happens to require one.

It is curious...

Yeah 1/2 Drive.

The set is near $100 smackers more than the shallow set and as mentioned, not really ticking all the boxes regarding semi - deep sockets.

I'am not buying because I want them. My plan is to retire a set of shallow sockets at work and put these into regular service, along side my 1/4 - 3/8 - semi deep sets. Space constraints really.

This thread is completely messed up...re-read all the pages talking about 3/8 drive stuff.

here is what is messing you up

Home > hand tools > 3/8" drive tools > flank drive® impact sockets > semi deep, inches >Socket, Impact, Semi Deep, 1/2", 6-Point

gives you a 38mm deep socket, but look up 1/2 drive

Search
Home > hand tools > 1/2" drive tools > flank drive® impact sockets > semi-deep, mm >Socket, Metric, Semi-Deep, 19 mm, 6 pt.

Dimension D, Length, mm 55.9

Home > hand tools > 1/2" drive tools > flank drive® impact sockets > semi-deep, mm >Socket, Metric, Semi-Deep, 27 mm, 6 pt.

gives you 60mm deep

Yeah I'am not interested in impact sockets.

Either the SnapOn book is messed up or the semi deep sockets are infact, only slightly longer than the shallows.

Unless you can explain it a little better?

EDIT: The sockets I'am interested in are SDH121 - SDH361

I see what you mean. Some diameters are slightly longer but the 3/8" is exactly the same 1.5" tall.
1" dia is 1-7/8" vs 1-9/16" for the shallow. Really doesn't seem like they are well thought out. I love semi-deep 1/4" & 3/8" drive but the 1/2" drive is wallowing.

Not sure i would talk to your driver and find out according to the site

3/8" Shallow vs SEMI Show they are the same height

https://store.snapon.com/Shallow-inches-chrome-Socket-Shallow-3-8-12-Point-P632113.aspx

https://store.snapon.com/Semi-Deep-inches-Socket-Semi-Deep-3-8-12-pt--P746142.aspx

And on the larger end the 1 1/8" Shallow Vs Semi is less then 1/4" taller

https://store.snapon.com/Shallow-inches-chrome-Socket-Shallow-1-1-8-12-Point-P632116.aspx

https://store.snapon.com/Semi-Deep-inches-Socket-Semi-Deep-1-1-8-12-pt--P746154.aspx

Doesnt make sense to me. But I love the 3/8 Semi Deep Impact sets i just picked up earlier this month on a buy one get one deal. And i also have the Metric 1/2 semi deep impact set and they definitely are all the same height and fall about 1/2 way between the shallow and deep.

Sorry, maybe I was confused as to what was happening. The semi deep chrome 12 pt meets a special aerospace spec. (AS954 Aviation Specification) and this is probaly another reason for the price bump (check out spline stuff at retail is thru the roof).

Note that semi deep 1/2 drive is essentially shallow 1/2 drive. Also if you take it literally, as 1/2 of 83mm is 42mm, and essentially same vs 38mm for semi-deep 3/8 drive. This is too close an overlap, so they staggered them a bit. Here is the chart.

Once you get into say 19mm you are at 54mm vs 38mm

1/2 semi deeps are 38-55-60mm deep (83mm = deep/2=42mm)
3/8 semi deeps are 38mm deep accross board (75mm = deep/2=38mm)
1/4 semi deep is 28mm accross board (50mm = deep/2=25mm)

Not saying this is perfect it just explains what is going on

1) diffrenetiation btw 3/8 semi and 1/2 drive shallows vs 42mm literal spec
2) internal broach/bolt depth
3) aerospace spec

Again, #3 is maybe why niche/ price preimum.

The semi deep in 1/2 is arguably the least compelling of the semi-deeps, but YMMV.
