Snap-on 1/2 locking flex repair

So a guy I work with broke my 24" locking flex ratchet by pulling the handle the wrong way while it was locked, my snap on man just happened to come on the same day but I had to go out on a service call so I asked my boss to give it to him to fix, when I returned he did fix it but he replaced the nice metal button with a plastic one!?!?! Why, I say why would he do that, he replace an unbroken metal button with a chincey piece of plastic how is that acceptable? I played nearly $300 for that thing!

I'm thinking bout it man, I wish I had just gave it to him myself I would have told him I want my button back, that thing is just begging to break being plastic, the first time it gets hit I see it just exploding.

Those repair kits you can get from So for like 10 bucks, so don't get mad...get even and have hime get you another ! The pastic was differn/black or something maybe someone else can chime in. I thought all current production ones are silver/metal, maybe Im mistaken.

Everyone I've laid hands on in the past few years has been the silver metal (including new ones). I've only ever seen the black ones on eBay ads.

Sounds like your dealer just has some old parts

I've got a few ratchets that have been rebuilt with the plastic button, some with metal. They all work, and if it breaks again the snappy guy will swap it out. I don't see what the big problem is? Sure not something to loose sleep over.

I have an older 3/8 locking flex head 36 tooth I bought new in 2001. It's button is black and I think plastic but I've never had a problem.

I'll bet he just rebuilt it with an older kit he's had on his truck. I'm sure if you just ask he will make it right by ordering a new rebuild with a metal button.

too late to nip it in the bud, but present your dilemma to the Snap-on guy next time he comes around.

It could be much much worse. You could have a computer that's out of warranty and also no longer supported; meaning, the corporate store won't even repair it on your dime because it's more than six years old. Snap-on tools are warrantied forever and supported forever. I'm sure glad at least one product in life is that way.

Old production was the plastic button, they changed to metal at some point. Dealer just happened to have a rebuild kit older than your ratchet.

Mine are all plastic and I have never broke one...

The plastic may not be brittle. I had to make a selector lever for an old tm70b because the metal one broke. It was cheapo cast **** and an impact resistant plastic one would've been better.
