snap on 1/2" sockets? chrome/industrial/impact

i have always thought that if i was buying sockets, the black industrial ones are always impact use or at least what they were designed for.

on snap on's website, in the 1/2" drive tools section, they have 1/2" flank drive chrome and industrial sockets. bellow those is a section flank drive impact sockets. what is the difference between 1/2" industrial and 1/2" impact? they are both black sockets but the prices are significant to one another

anyone have some ideas on this?

The industrial sockets are the same function as the chrome sockets, just without the shiny finish. Not for impact use.

can they be used with an impact and retain all warranty characteristics? i can't tell the difference when looking at one from another

I think the industrial ones might have "Non-Impact" on them, at least a Snap On universal socket I have that had the industrial finish says it.

In a clean assembly environment you do not want to chance a flake of chrome coming off and contaminating your assembly. I worked in a production engine assembly facility and we were not allowed to use any chrome tools for this reason. Also, in a production environment there are a lot of powered torque control tooling. Flaking chrome could lead to many cuts and injuries. These tools are not impact, but pulse or electronic. You can use non-impact sockets with these tools.

Experience. The impact sockets will have thicker sides and are generally 6-points.

Do you mean "how do I tell an impact socket from a regular industrial finish socket"? If so, the regular socket with industrial finish will have much thinner walls and may say "not for impact use". I really don't see that many industrial finish tools on the resale market. Most of these are used up and disposed of before they can be resold.

the impact socket will be noticeably heavier to the hand and will feel more solid... plus using the industrial on a friction ring impact gun will actually round out the corners of the drive slot..

The snap on industrial will have a through hole in the base for a pin. Atleast the ones I have do. From the late 90s.

Industrial sockets have a pin hole to allow attachment to torque control tooling.
