Yeah the etching throws up red flags. I don't think snapon would do that since it could easily become obscured or worn off

That's odd. Not sure why it is etched like that rather than stamped

My only thought is that it could be a special limited quantity wrench made for a specific company or military customer.

Snap on has a plant in the asian area ( China) where they make the same/similar tools as the ones that are made here. That plant supplies tools for that region of the world.
It is possible that it is for that area of the world

Yep, looks fake. Good catch 2Steigers!

Somebodies' gonna be pissed. I bet when it's sitting in a set of authentic OEXM__B's it stands out like a sore thumb.

It does say "USA" on it.

The laser etching does not look normal but it certainly could be due to a custom or low production model. For what it's worth they do make a 28mm wrench

28.58 is 1 1/8 "

Since 28 is an odd size, what do you say they may have taken a blank 1 1/8 and etched on the size????? Maybe a special run?

I actually saw several of these wrenches last year. One of the regular vendors at my flea market sells military surplus tools and he normally has tons of Armstrong and SK but I noticed these wrenches and he said he got them from a online auction he won and had to go pick up the stuff at the Marine Corps Logistics base in Albany Georgia. He said they were the only ones like it he had seen. I will ask him tomorrow if he still has one and try to take a picture of it if he does.
Edit: I just found this on yahoo auctions Japan. It looks like all of the snap on wrenches the are selling are not printed like this one though?

Man, I don't know....I was sure that was fake when I first saw it. But as I look harder at the pics I'm not so sure. I went and glanced at some back catalogs and Snap-On hasn't listed 28mm oex wrenches before including their latest catalog. I wonder if it's too new to be in the catalog as in just added to the lineup and sporting a change to laser etching, which I HATE. Thoughts?

Why don't someone report it to SO and see what is their response. I have a feeling it is legit.

Yes sorry I'm a newbie got the link wrong, it's a head scratcher a good deal if it was real

Meh. 50 bucks for a wrench. Larger sizes if it's made good enough probably don't matter what's stamped on it. It tends to be that way honestly.

Hey if it's your only wrench then yeah maybe 50 bucks is okay, but not sure what you'd use it for on a car. I don't believe anyone would use one on some axle nut...don't believe it unless you plan to lose some fingers in the process.:lol_hitti

"Laser" etching is a relatively new phenomenon. Flank drive, however, has been around for decades to my knowledge. That box end is not flank drive. I give a big  to it being FAKE.

I can't think of anything automotive, but there's plenty beyond that. I just used a 28mm wrench today (airbags on a lowboy trailer).

People who think the smaller Snap-On wrenches are high priced haven't priced out these larger ones. This isn't out of line, unfortunately.

Sometimes Snappy gives us dealers promotion wrenches laser etched with a promotional saying. But it's a REAL wrench that has the part number and size stamped/forged on it. Nothing like the one above.

I did last night and listed several of the sellers auctions. My response was:

"Hello Bob,
I reviewed these auctions and the items do appear to be authentic. Of course, it would be easier to confirm this if I had the tools in front of me, but the markings to seem to match those of authentic Snap-on Tools. Thank you for contacting Snap-on Customer Care!

I followed up with another question about when they started selling laser etched tools, but with their offices now closed until Monday, the answer will wait.

I have never purchased the Snap On 29mm, or 34mm Combination Wrenches because nobody could tell me what the application for those 2 sizes were for. I wonder what a 28mm is for?

I also looked at several of the seller's other s-o auctions and found them to be authentic looking. It's just this one expired auction that has the odd looking laser printing and the non-flank drive box end.

There were several others that expired yesterday with laser etching. Look at his completed auctions.

I gave snappy several different auctions to look at, all laser etched.

Their standard 12pt combo series OEXM(mm) aren't flank drive plus (open end.)

As for flank drive, the auction's 4th picture (1st of the box end) sure looks like it is. Along the left side, two teeth of the 12pt section have a curve to their face that contacts a hex fastener.

I've only heard the laser etching to be less durable; haven't seen it for myself.

I bought a 1/2" 3/8" drive flare nut crowsfoot a year or two ago and it was laser etched (my 18mm FN CF is older and stamped of course.)

As for catalogs & websites being comprehensive, I don't find their lacking a 28mm in listings to be evidence either way.

Yes I looked at those yesterday. My only beef was with the box end of that one wrench. There is a distinct peak and valley on each of the 12 points. You hardly see that anymore.

I just dragged the photos off 2 more of his auctions for other OEXM____B series wrenches to compare the box ends only. Unfortunately the 20mm and 24mm aren't as sharp a photo as his 28 was but you don't see that chiseled look in the peaks and valleys, it's just that one wrench.

Maybe it's possible snappy made the 28 as special order and the only broaching die they could find at the factory for that size was an old one.

Agreed. That is not a flank drive end. Flank drive has rounded broaching, not the sharp points.
