Well my 3/8 impact that is only 6 weeks old failed today. The motor spins but the anvil does not turn. Its under warranty but makes me think about the overall lifespan of the tool. My Makita 14.4 lasted many years without any problems.
Anyone else had one of these fail?

I had one a year ago and had the same problem. I got it replaced and I sold it.

If you are talking about the new style, I have had mine since it came out about 2 1/2 years ago. I haven't had any problems with it and it has even had a diesel fuel bath a time or two. I been considering buying a spare though, i figure it's about time for a rebuild. BTW, I use my 18 volt batteries on it instead of the 14.4.

Seems like a lot of moaning about a tool failure through abuse to me. It says 14.4v for a reason. Did you use 18v batteries on your makita?

It amazes me the lack of reading comprehension. "Motor still turns, Anvil doesn;t" Duh If an extra 3.6 volts broke the anvil it wasn't woth a **** to begin with. Tool polishers, sheeh!

lots of guys run the 18v's on them around here with no issues. Most for more than a year easy.

I'm not saying nothing....I run 18v on mine also. A LOT of guys here running that gun also use 18v batteries but none of them have ever snapped. It sounds like the anvil retaining pin snapped off.

It has a rating for a reason. So a 14.4v impact run on 18v batteries to make more power? And then. Complaining when it fails. And I bet the snap on dealer won't be told.
Tool polisher? No full time dealer tech so no time to polish anything.

Sure they will. They won't lose your business selling you overpriced tools over that. That would be like shooting yourself in the leg in the middle of a Marathon. You can tell the dealer but unless he's a total idiot he's not telling Snap-On

My Snap on dealer is the one that told me what I needed to do to make it work with the 18volt battery. I guess that means I wouldn't be telling my dealer:lol_hitti

Mine's out of warranty and if it ever breaks, the flat rate fix is the same no matter WHAT is wrong with it. I would open it up to see if the pin sheared though before sending it back if it is not under warranty. If it was still under warranty, my dealer would take care of it.

A question to the guys running them on 18 volt batteries, are you modifing the battery or the impact?

I recall I made the decision to go with the 1/2" because the 3/8" wasn't made by Snap On or something like that.... the 1/2" has been stellar... if a bit over powered for some of my applications.

have six 3/8" electric guns in the shop, none have ever had a problem.
2 are nearly 7 years old, made by Snap On, just replace batteries really when they cant hold charge.
1 is the ct4410, which has been trouble free
2 Matco 3/8" guns, no problems
1 is one of the newer 3/8" models from Snap-On, just purchased last Tuesday, start abusing them in a few days.

All of the above have been dropped, or run over, and show the scars of battle. We have more air guns that break anvils, so I would say, just simply dumb luck for having one fail.

There was a little ridge on the bottom of the tool where the battery slides on. I took a die grinder to it and was good to go.

smoke has been known to come out of them.... it's $90 for a full rebuild out of warranty.

Mine required no modifications.

From what I've seen, with the older batteries you could pull down while sliding on and it would work, but the newer batteries seem to require a little trimming.

I've thrown an 18v battery on there to test fit, but never actually tried using it like that.

We have five in the shop, no real problems.

One guy insists his makes a weird noise, and another has had to replace the anvil because sockets were falling off (he uses chrome extensions on his guns, all of which seem to have a "falling off" problem )

Is it just me or when they're new, they give off a stinky smell when used

pm me the serial number and i will forward it up to see if any others along that line have had any problems.
if it is not that old then they might want to inspect it a little more once it comes in for repair.

I have friend that works in power tools in kenosha and he always likes to get feedback from the end user. does not matter if the feedback is good or not. how else would they improve things without good feedback
