Norbar is an extremely good English made line of torque tools. Snap-On seems intent on monopolizing the torque wrench market.

Hmmm, interesting...!

Traditionally, there were 3 major manufacturers of Torque wrenches in the U.K. Britool, Torqueleader, and Norbar.

Britool were always my favourites - rock solid, and geared towards mechanics needs. I've got quite a few, from 3/8 to 3/4 drive, which is just as well as Britool got bought by Facom, ended up with Stanley, and got trashed in the process!

Torqueleader are very much the 'Rolls Royce' of torque wrenches - their big dial reading tools are awesome instruments but tend to get used in precision engineering - things like aerospace and defence. Their torque screwdrivers are easily recognised by their bright anodised aluminium handles. Torqueleader recently got bought out by Gedore, which is interesting, as Gedore / Dremotec have long been manufacturing tools of a very similar style to Torqueleader, so they obviously had the hots for 'em! So far they seem to have left the firm alone.

Which leaves Norbar - probably the biggest of the three. Norbars automotive torque wrenches are not quite the quality of the others (which are probably over engineered), but they are incredibly reasonably priced. I can get one for less money than some of the Taiwanese stuff, and they work very well. They make a lot of big industrial stuff, which I suspect is where the money is.

Not sure what Snap On's game is here. You may well see Norbar tools rebranded as Snap On, but at about 3 times the price - that's been their M.O. with every other firm they've acquired, but they have also tended to trash the quality of the original products too - witness Lindstrom. American ownership of any other British tool manufacturer seems to have been a death sentence, so Snap On will be bucking the trend if Norbar are run differently, though I hope they are!

I'd seen they were based in England. How big is their market area? Can't say I've ever seen one in the States, but I don't get out too much lately.

My 1990's vintage Gedore 1/2 torque wrench is made by Norbar. I think many others rebranded them.

Best buy what I want then before the quality goes down and the price up, like with every other European tool company thats become part of Snap-On.

What happened with lindstrom? What did they make?

Electronics pliers and cutters, the Lindstrom's had the reputation of being the best cutters.
Snap on switched production to Spain from Sweden, quality is down, prices are not.
Same with Bahco, production outsourced, quality down, prices still high for the good stuff, but a lot of cheap junk also branded, namely socket sets, the adjustables are so expensive on the shelves over here now I doubt many get sold. Worst thing is those lovely ratchets with the dual 80 guts were never sold here.
I dont think any of the European tool makers Snap On has bought has improved under their ownership.

I'm guessing Snap On is diversifying their market and doing so basically by purchasing market share. Plus if you own all the manufacturers then you don't really have to spend money on beating your competition.

I hope they don't ruin their products or jack their prices. We use a 3/4" Norbar splitbeam torque wrench daily for touring truck tires, and we have them certify it every year.

Dang, first Sturtevant Richmont a couple months back, now this? Honestly, I'd never heard of either of these companies before joining this forum, but I'm wondering what SO has in mind acquiring them. First CDI, then S-R, now Norbar?
I have a little Sturtevant 0 to 50 in-lb. beam torque wrench that is even before it became Sturtevant Richmont. They used to run magezine ads of a cartoon character with the body of a torque wrench, flexing his muscles. He was called The Mad Torquer. A little changed version of my wrench still in the caralog.
