I have a chance to buy a 30 gallon 5 hp snap on compressor from a guy its a 2004 model BRA5DV30VP its in good shape. looking online i see it delivers 7 cfm at 125psi on new model. this one is a 150psi unit.

my question is will this run most anything i want? I have no air tools because I currently have an air compressor thats barely capable of inflating a bicycle tire, but id def like to invest in some air tools in the future. price is $300 for it. Is this a good deal or save up for a 60 gallon IR or equivalent? I do have 120 or 220 access in garage.

What are you going to use it for?

For me, I always believe you can never have enough air, most of the members on here will say buy the most biggest one that you can afford, but it depends what your using it for.

only using it to work on my personal vehicles and projects. ive gone years and years without airtools just thought itd be nice to start using some. id probably get a 1/2" impact a die grinder and angle grinder a cut off wheel and i dunno what else. I dont see anything else in that price range any where near as powerful. I could hold off for a 60 gallon, but if this one is a good price ill just get it and start collecting air tools

i doubt a sandblaster is in my future. I would spend the $900 for the IR 60 gallon at TSC, but that ones hard to slip by the wife. I see they have a CH 60 gallon for $430 my problem is I dont know **** about compressors or quality.

i'd buy that in a heartbeat!!!

if it doesn't work, you could easily flip it for 500!

for serious $500?

That's can't be a 5HP motor, more like 1.5-2HP on 110V/220V.

$300 is fair. You can not find any new compressor out there under $400 for that type of CFM rating. For a Snap-On brand, it's consider a fairly good deal.

The unit won't keep up well with air grinding but it will be more than enough for impact, wrench, or any mechanic tools.

I have that same compressor. Its a nice unit and its very quiet. Its also light enough that I can load it in my truck and haul it to a friends house if need be. I would jump on it for $300

That model is still listed on the SO website on sale for ~$1300 with a 5hp motor just like the OP listed. If I needed one I'd offer $250 but would go the $300. The Canadian company ( Big Red Air Machines ) www.bigred.org that makes these for SO is still in biz so parts would still be available.

It isn't even really a Snap On. It's made by some unknown company that Snap On licensed to use their name. Something they are regretting for numerous products.
Go with the CH 60 gal. CH is a good name in compressors.
It will outlast that little one because it won't be running nearly full time and working hard constantly like that little one will.

According to the SO specs, the motor pulls as much as 30A @120V. I can't imaging how many times the seller's breaker trips.

It's rare to have 20A breaker @ 120V in residential, let alone 30A. If you're to buy this, you would have to run a new breaker line. If so, I would run 240V line with 20A breaker.

I've always ran mine on a 20amp breaker. It will trip a 15amp if anything else is plugged in. It is a nice compressor, I regularly get compliments about how quiet it is and how quick it fills.

Aaron- I will go for that 30 gal 'pressor. It's plenty for almost rest of usual garage's common air tools. However as far as with grinders.. It could hold up air but u will have to make couple stops for tank to be refilled. If I were you, get the electric grinder for worth peanuts about right there. Harbor freight sells electric one. I have one..still going good. I have 30 gal husky... With almost 6 cfm at 90 psi, I spent two days on painting my jeep that its original color became dull so I re-coated w different color...unbelievable finish! So get that snap on unit. Wish u the best luck!

Thanks everyone. My garage elec box was set up right with 20 and 30 amp breakers Even have separate wiring 8/3 for my 220. I could go either way. Think I'll get it

Yup...remember as soon as "Snap-On" appears price goes up exponentially....:headscrat
