I used my new air hammer a few days ago, now I can't get the chisel out of it! It's a new snap on chisel, it went in just fine. Is there some trick to this quick change chuck, or did I get a dud?:dunno:

This happens to me often. I truly doubt the balls are the problem. My best guess is the base of the bit has mushroomed or the actual quick collet has mushroomed around he release balls. if happen frequently with cheap bits or cheaper quick release retainers like the one hat comes with the 50$ Ingersoll rand air hammer. if you can unscrew the quick release from the hammer then grind the bit down on the base were it comes in contact with the bit retainer. That should fix the problem if not it is the actual bit retainer. You're going to have to cut he bit and take the snap ring off that holds the small balls in and take a die grinder with a bur to the holes that have mushroomed and are preventing the balls from retracting back into the retainer.

The hammer, bit, and retainer all have about 2 min of use on them. I hope nothing mushroomed that fast! I'll lube the balls up  and see what happens.

Check the spring on the quick release portion. If the bottom coil has been spread a bit and another coil has been pushed down beside, the retainer can not be pushed all the down and the bit will not release. I had this happen with mine. Just realigned the bottom spring on the quick release and out it came.

Yours might be the same.

Just the other day I had the same problem my bit would come out of my $20 air hammer with a $5 HF quick chuck on it. I struggled for 10 mins it finally came out. I kept thinking I wasn't pulling back enough to release the bit from the chuck. Never thought to look for mushrooms. I guess this can happen to any brand.

Check this spring if it has it (arrow pointing to it) If it comes out of alignment/overlapped the collar cannot be pulled down far enough and it doesn't take much for it NOT to release.

Thanks! This is what it was. The bottom spring coil overlapped the next one.
