I'm gona take a shot in the dark and say that it may be the flutter disk. It may be gummed up. I would try running some good air tool oil through it before I took it apart. One question, when connected to air does it hiss air when not pointed up?

Oil it up really good, my brand new matco one did the same thing until I oiled it up, the piston gets stuck and when you tip it up it falls back down.

It will not work unless you have a bit in it pushing on something. With the quick release there is no spring pushing the flutter disk back in so it will just hiss. makes sense as to why it will only work upwards, Gravity is pushing the disk back in

If I remember right when I took mine apart to fix it there were two heavy round discs and one small sheet metal like disc. One of my heavier discs was broken in half.Took quite a few dealers to finally find one who would order it.cost me $7.

My Snap ~Om PH 50D {i think} is a temper-mental pain in the ****.

I have had to replace a piece inside but I don't remember what its called possibly that flutter thing as mentioned above.

What I chimed in to say is ,I use marvel air tool oil in excess before & after.

On the after, I squirt a bunch in there & then pull the chisel & a squirt in there also.

Then reinsert the chisel & burp it maybe 6 blows then its ready for storage & I wont have to fight it to get it to start next time.

It took many years to finger that one out.:lol_hitti

Good luck with it.

I have a PH50E, and I found it common for the rear of the case to have a hairline fracture across the top over years of use. In my opnion, the snap on air hammers have proven themseves to be an expensive *************, as well as the mac one. I used a co-workers Bluepoint AT2050 and it dances circles around my PH50E, so much so that I bought the 2050 and have never looked back.

3 co workers from my old shop had the mac heavy duty and they loved it for about a year and then they all ran into problems with it, and my current employer has the same mac hammer and experiences the same problems. My AT2050 has been problem free for 2 years now and still performs like when I bought it.
