Hard to explain... but basically it's to find wiring. If you have an end of the wire, you hook up the connectors. On the other end where there might be a group of wires hanging and you are trying to find that specific one, you hit the button and it beeps when you make contact with the wire in which the toner is hooked up to.

Does that make any sense?
