Snap on anniversary box

So I've been kind of looking to buy a big box, to consolidate my multiple boxes. This guy has a box for sale (3 hr drive for me, but I need a trip there for other things), and I've always liked the looks of this series (and its a big box). He says make a offer in the ad. I contacted him just to see what he wants.

He says he gave $15,000 for the box- I doubt it was that much in 1988. He said he turned down $5,000, for it.

I told him he should take the $5,000 offer, because its more than anyone else is probably going to give him for it, including me.

He wants to only sell locally, wont deal with shipping, but he gave me the impression he wants 10k or more for the box. I don't see anyone giving that kind of $ for a 20+ yr old box, no matter how nice it is.

Probably the goofy thing in his story- he says he doesn't want to pay storage on it, because his airplane hangar is damaged? If you can afford to rent a hangar space- surely you could rent a storage building until its repaired couldn't you?

Nice looking box, but not worth anywhere near $10k. Probably can't get into the hanger because of the recreational herbs he's using

For what it is, my family has been buying and selling things for nearly 60 years... A lot of people don't know how to depreciate their items accordingly. I'd mention to him what you can get a similarly specced out brand new box for, and how you'll have the option to pay that off over time versus having to plump down 10k all at once...that sometimes helps people to gain perspective

Do I personally think it's worth 10k? No, but with that being said, I believe most people Whether conscious or not, believe their own personal items are worth more than the next guys'. I'm guilty of it myself sometimes. Everything is only worth what someone is willing to pay at the end of the day. Like the OP stated. You can afford to rent hangar space, but you couldn't swing a flatbed tow truck charge and a small storage unit for a year? Maybe he's thinking of upgrading?

If he's so hung up on what he paid for it new, he may as well keep it because that has no relation to what it's worth now on the open market.

I've never really bought anything on Craigslist from people who say to make an offer because they're just hoping to get overpaid for whatever it is they're selling.

Well since I have the price sheets from 1990 I can tell you what that box went for new:
Kr1000- $3,790
Kr1100-$2,580
Kr273-$281
Kr1010-$1,265
So that meant if he paid list price it still only be $7,916. So $15k is way high. That's a beautiful set up and mint condition, but he'll be luck to get any over $6,000 for that set up.

I don't know if that is necessarily true, my local CL is full of overpriced items that have been listed for a long, long time. Some people never let it go, then when they die you can get it for a reasonable price at their estate sales...just sayin...

That's what I was thinking. The brand new KRL1000 bottom and top box (whatever part # that was current then is) set my boss purchased for the shop in 1995 (I now run the same shop and it's still here) was 7k when it was delivered......this guys selling an older version, which has has holes drilled in the side for that side-box setup that doesn't actually fit the KRL series.....yeah....I think I'd offer 3K for it ONLY if I had a bunch of disposable cash on hand....he should'a took the 5K.

I like the boxes. According to the US Inflation Calculator $15k in 1988 is over $30k today.

Thanks for the responses guys- I knew someone on here would know what they were originally sold for.

I hope he gets the $ he is looking for out of the box (I don't think he will, but he can try), it is a really nice looking box, I just don't have that kind of $ to spend for tool storage.

A fair deal would be 4k IMO. That box is mint but its the older style layout too

Its a disease some guys have if there buying its junk and if they are selling its GOLD.

I'd be hard pressed to pay $3k for that. If you look, you'll find a nice used epic box that is years ahead of that one in comfort with the drawer slides etc...for a very comparable price!

It`s on eBay right now. It looks like it was previously listed on there with an $8K BIN. I`m not sure where the guy found his 1990 prices in the ad, but they are a bit high.

There is an Epiq for sale around Atl right now for 4000. Its a nice enough box but there are KRLs around where I am at for 2000 and up. Not 3 hours away either.
