Does anyone know the original price of a Snap-on Apprentice Tool Set such as this one advertised on our local Craigslist? I'm trying to determine if it's a good bargain.

New snap on tools - $2700

A new apprentice set of snap on tools with 9 drawer box. Tools were bought several years ago for an automotive tech school but never used with the exception of the breaker bar and 15/16 socket used to change my lawn mower blades. The bottom drawer not shown in the pictures has a multi meter, hack saw, respirator, test light, standard and metric allen wrenches.

Who ARE these people? Who buys thousands of dollars' worth of tools, then uses three of them once or twice "to take off a lawnmower blade" and then lets the rest go at a loss after a couple years?

The reason is stated in the ad. A person who decided not to pursue the automotive trade. Not everyone can afford to have thousand of dollars ******* in tools.

Unless you are a student you will never get stuff new for that price from Snap-On. The website lists the set right around $5800. The student price list I have from school lists that set around $2300 w/o the box. If everything from that set is there, I would say it is an ok deal, but I'd be willing to bet you could piece that set together cheaper than buying it straight up like that.

Schedule a time to go look at the tools and bring cash with you. I would bring $1500.00 and try to dicker with him.

Thank you all for your observations. I have been trying to pin down whether I wanted to make an offer. The listing has been up almost a month and if I was going to move on it I would need to do so soon before it expired.

A set like that would list around $5000. If it was from a tool truck guy giving a student discount, it would probably be a little less.

A college automotive service program would usually have a deal where a student can get the set at a large discount. This is usually through an industrial sales representative, not a tool truck dealer. In a case such as this, the set would cost pretty close to what that guy is trying to sell it for.

Here is a somewhat comparable set on the Snap On website, complete with box...

From that pic, the set really doesn't look that big. You could probably piece a similar set of second-hand stuff (possibly various brands) from eBay for half the asking price.

That set shown by StephenW is not the same set first listed. The set in question is the US Set 2. The one shown there is the Metric Set A. The US set 2 has standard and metric tools.

I believe this is the set for sale:

Thanks again to all who have responded. For larger pics and information, here is the original Lexington, KY, Craigslist URL. I regret that eventually this will expire, that's why I went to the trouble of posting the photos when I created this thread.

These are the same people who don't realize that auto repair is difficult, dirty, and dangerous work, plus the pay *****. They buy these high dollar tools only to later discover this after a few weeks of work in the school shop.

For that set of tools, $1500 max is all I would offer; would start out at $1200:shocking:

You could be right. I looked at the US set 2 and thought it looked like it had more tools than the set in question.

I posted the metric set and said "somewhat comparable set".

The set 2 doesn't contain a multimeter or respirator.

I think the set is actually a custom assortment, with contents specified by the college program that it was purchased through. That was how the program was set up at the college I went to.

Keep in mind too, that a lot of listings on Craigslist have generic pictures from the snap on catalog of brand new rollcabs, etc, with people giving some story about how they just bought this box and never used it and are ready to take a big loss b/c they need to sell it.

I can't help but be very suspicious of these ads...seems to me most of them are probably dealers or middlemen who are trying to make a buck on someone that thinks they're getting a deal. I know there are people who legitimately buy a box or toolset then don't use it or get out of the profession, but as the saying goes...let the buyer beware! :shocking:

Know the market before you rush out and buy something that seems like a great deal. And if you do your homework, you'll find the right deal sooner or later.
