Hi, must have been covered in a old thread :D

Just wondering , what is the consensus of opinion on the new style spanners , or should I say combination wrenches

I was once reliably informed that just because they have USA on the reverse side does not mean they are still manufactured in USA :headscrat

Most of mine are Old Logo - going back over 30 years but I have some newer ones where the size is embossed on the open jaw end , these seem to have stood up OK with little wear or chrome chipping off at the jaws.

I find that some of the CAN or Canada marked spanners have chipped chrome off at the ring end too , seems the genuine USA manufactured ones were superior.

Thanks

No you weren't...

I'd suggest the Canadian examples you've encountered were likely just used harder and/or longer. I've never heard any suggestions the Canadian production was inferior...

Thanks , I am dumping my worn but serviceable Snap-on stuff in a small garage I use for dismantling , OK for rusted stuff & the odd rubber / copper hammer blow.

I will be replacing some common sizes I use all time inc. " AF that I still use.

Will try and obtain good / very good condition on eBay or new new logo as they come available.

So , it seems that what I have , 1. very Old logo 30 years + 2. a few newer ones where the dimension is indented on the OE , also the new Logo where the size is marked on the shank , can you confirm the material grade and chrome finish has remained the same over the years. btw - I have quite a bit of Blue Point USA , and this has stood up to wear / lack of stretch on OE as good as the Snap-on , however - obviously the chrome plating has soon worn thin. I have tried the Taiwanese manuf. Blue Point , the chrome peels off the OE straight away !

Sorry to be a bit pedantic about this , I just wish to pursue the better tool .

I have noticed that my Old Logo , are very well made. Looking at a OEXM 17 USA , the open jaw edges are nice linished with small curvature , this seems to prevent loss of chrome starting - such detail is obviously important . Probably the chrome is a hard chrome like on a hydraulic ram ? on to a coppered base ?

Looking at TWO Old Logo , a WOEX 120 USA 7/16" BS , the preparation at the OE is not quite so good , yet possibly a later WOEX 110 USA 3/8" BS , the edge prep. seems better (the Snap-on logo - is much smaller on this one).

I have recently obtained a 19mm new logo OEXM190B , as good as new , it is noticeable that the attention to detail at the OE edges is not up to the same standard , rounded slightly but in comparison quite sharp.

If - I went for the SOEXM type (teeth at open jaw) , is it correct to assume these are more for heavy dismantling ? Obviously it seems to me that plated fixing hex. heads are going to get marked ?

newer ones with the size stamped on the open end? I've been buying for 20 years and haven't seen that on wrenches other than the ones my dad gave me

I purchased Snap-on first in 1973 , those with the size marked at OE - probably originate in early 1980's , time flies

I purchased PROTO from 1968 , the tool dealer said they were supposed to be as good as Snap-on , I replied what are Snap-on
