Found an 18mm wrench that filled a hole in my set on ebay with the black industrial finish. Threw a low (well, for Snap-On) bid on there just for the heck of it and ended up winning. $9 shipped for a brand new 100% unused Snap-On black wrench.

My question: these things are exactly the same as a normal Snap-On wrench, just without all of the shiny fanciness on the outside, right? Same flank drive, same metal hardness, etc? They're on the same page in the catalog and have a really similar part number, so my thinking was "yes."

If yes, I may keep filling in the gaps in my set with these at the rate of one a week or something as they seem to be cheaper. I'm not much for polishing and staring at my tools; I just use them.

Yes exactly the same as a regular chrome wrench as far as specifications and tolerances.

Nice. I cleaned out Dave's Trading Post as far as US-made wrenches I need goes. I'm one of those poor fellows, so I think I'm going to go this route for the leftovers I need. One wrench a week should be manageable while maintaining my current rate of saving for school. :rocker:

Shoot I dig the way they look

I don't mind them so much, either. They remind me of all the old-timey DOE Armstrongs and Vlcheks I see at garage sales.

No thickness change with regard to chrome? Serious question; I had contemplated it before but never had a need to know.

And I did see a "good deal" on a mis-coated SO wrench (industrial on a chrome PN) on eBay a while back.

Granted I don't know what chrome plating process they use, but it is probably less than .005" thick. I would call that a negligible difference.

And some of us actually prefer the industrial finish to that of the chromies.

Same here. However, I do have to admit that they're easier to misplace in the cramped engine compartment of a modern car, than a bright chrome wrench or socket.
