Snap On, Bosch & Milwaukee Sub-Compact Driver review

Sub-Compact Drivers are becoming popular and I thought I'd give my opinion about the 3 different brands I have used.

The first thing I want to do it point out that I'm a huge fan of Snap On and buy their tools weekly.

A couple years ago I bought one of these cordless screwdrivers off the Snap On truck. And it seems to be very popular among techs. When I look at the tool box thread I see that tool in a lot of boxes. Personally I never was impressed with it. I found it just wasn't up to the standards I feel Snap On are about. Truthfully I was disappointed in it. Eventually I traded it back in to my dealer.

I also want to talk about the micro impact wrench Snap On came out with a few months ago. My dealer wanted me to try one for a week so I did. This things has to be the biggest joke I have ever seen Snap On come out with. The battery life is the poorest I have ever seen on a cordless tool. I have no idea why they would make it a 3/8 and not a 1/4. It has no power at all. Any forum talk I have seen about it most guys tend to give it back the next week. Compared to the Bosch I review below this thing is a embarrassment for Snap On and their dealers.

Several months ago I bought this Milwaukee 12-Volt Li-ion Sub-Compact Driver Kit and couldn't be happier. There is no comparison between it and the Snap On unit for less money. The battery lasts for an unbelievable amount of time. The only thing I don't like about it is the forward-reverse switch is lower than I think it should be and I have a tendency to push it while using the tool. It has a built in battery gauge that is very handy to have.

I liked it so much I wanted another one for home. I came across this reconditioned Bosch set that includes the screwdriver and impact. For the price I decided to buy it. I like the Bosch even better than the Milwaukee. I don't have the same issue with the forward-reverse switch and I just like the feel better. The only thing I like better with the Milwaukee is the battery gauge.

I'm really liking the impact. It has a ring of 3 LED's around the chuck that shines around the work area. The screwdriver has one LED above the trigger and it shines the bottom half of the work area. The Milwaukee is the same way. I assume it couldn't be put around the chuck like the impact because of the clutch assembly being there.

I would never be without either one now. The time these save is unbelievable. I kept the Bosch set for work and took the Milwaukee home.

Snap ON:

Pros: I really don't see any compared to the competition
Cons: Has no clutch or light. Is only 7.2 volts. Does not come with Lithium-Ion batteries. Batteries die fast. Made in China

Milwaukee:

Pros: 12 volt Lithium-Ion. Outstanding battery life. Battery gauge. Has a clutch & LED light. Very powerful. Will drive a 3" deck screw.
Cons: forward-reverse switch gets bumped to easily. Made in China

Bosch:

Pros: 12 volt Lithium-Ion. Outstanding battery life. Screwdriver has a clutch & LED light. Impact has a ring of LED's. Very powerful. Will drive a 3" deck screw. The impact does even a better job at driving screws.
Cons: No battery gauge. Made in Malaysia

After getting the impact I came across this Locking Power Adapter Set and bought it. This is the cats mow for the impact.

I have had the Bosch 10.8 impactor for 3 years and love it. If Milwaukee would come out with an impact I'd prolly buy it as there are they have some cool tools in 12V.

The newer version of the Snap-On driver part # CTS561CLDB now comes with a clutch; aside from that it is the same unit, right? Is the new one any better?; I guess the battery issues are still the same. Funny, I have read reviews of the Snapon and many love it; then, others hate it... oh, well... go figure! :) I would like to hear others here who have owned one and what their experiences have been; I have a DeWalt 7.2 volt Screwdriver Kit, Cordless DW920K-2 which is powerful, little heavy but also bulkier then the others.... the only thing is I dropped it and the head came off and the ball bearings, parts went everywhere... turns out it costs $50 from a dewalt service center to repair (flat fee, new head assembly); I am debating what to do or buy next (since a new one is about $80) but it maybe not quite up to dropping and abuse that one would encounter in a auto shop. While battery operated tools are great; thats one thing I love about air tools, they can handle allot of abuse and keep going! I'm still looking for options; post your recommendations!

It's not quite as small as those, but I've had the Dewalt 7.2V cordless screwdriver for about 6 years now, and it's my absolute favorite (and most used) cordless tool. Maybe the 12V models have a little more oomph. The Dewalt has no problem whatsoever countersinking 3.5" deck screws into pressure-treated 4x6s without pre-drilling, so that's more than enough power for my needs.

I like it so well, I bought 3 as gifts for my dad, father-in-law, and best friend. They love them just as much as I do, and use them just as frequently.

I have the M12 compact drill driver, and the 1/4" Impact driver. i love both of them, they charge quickly, and the battery life is awesome. I do suggest that for the drill driver you look at their 3/8" keyless chuck version, because getting all new 1/4" shank drill bits *****! Although you can get a 1/4" shank X keyless chuck adapter for them..... but other than that its great.

I have that bosch driver. Nice little tool. I especially like the magnetic chuck--allows you to use insert bits directly in the chuck, without needing a holder or a power bit.

I agree, the bosch is really the best. Most of their tools are really top tier; very few of them are bad. I also agree that the milwaukee is slightly worse. My old man got 2 years out of his... not bad but my bosch is older and still going. Now he regrets buying the more "bling" tool instead of the tried and true.

Snap-on is a fish out of water when it comes to electrical tools. Just about anyone makes a better electrical driver, and their cordless impact tools are seriously outclassed by the ingersoll line.

I have a question about these "sub-compact" drivers.

Last year I purchased a Makita BTD142HW. That thing never leaves my hand when I'm working on my bikes and I'm half tempted to purchase another one just to avoid swapping out bits.

Anyways, when Makita, Milwaukee, Bosch, etc all released these "sub-compact" drivers I was all about getting one - until I realized that they are just the same length, if not slightly longer, than the non "sub-compact" models.

Granted, I see the appeal of having a battery in the handle instead of stuck on the bottom of it but still... Wondering if someone who has both styles might be able to chime in?

You just closed the deal for me on the Bosch set :bounce:
My local Lowe's has both the Impactor & the driver, 2 batteries and charger (complete set) for $160 :shocking:
Rediculously good deal!

Can't wait to get them now!

I have the snap on screwdriver. It's not a powerhouse, but when I'm working in tight spaces like under a dash, no other driver will fit like this one. It's got its purpose, so I don't know why people compare to units twice its size and weight.

Check out the Bosch website. They have a special right now when you buy a 12 volt driver or drill. Free battery or flashlight or P20 driver.

I have the Milwaukee M12 driver, 1/4" hex impact, and compact reciprocating saw. I use them all the time. I could not be happier with them especially the battery life. I have been looking at the 3/8" impact but not sure how much I'll use it.

The Bosch won't work when the batteries get cold. Alot of guys in the trades are liking the Milwaukee because it doesn't seem to suffer the same affliction. I have the Bosch and it is unusable in the winter time when it sits in my van. Since this is a garage forumn I would imagine most people here have some form of heat where they are using the tool so that won't be an issue. When I got the Bosch it was the only game in town. If I could make the purchase again I would go with the Milwaukee becaue of the cold issue.

I sold my Bosch 10.8 and wish I hadn't. I have a Hitachi now and the batterys dont last as long, nor does it seem as powerful. It is not terrible however, just not as good as the Bosch. I have used a friends Milwaukee quite a bit and like it a lot as well. I will probably go back to one of these as soon as i find one cheap enough.

Billymade look at the little 7.2 Makita impact. I love mine it has a good bit more power than you would think. Works great when you only have a straight shot at a bolt.
