Snap On Box Cutter ?

I recently bought this box cutter ( comes as a pair one red one black) on ebay with a "buy it now" seemed really cheap by Aussie standards but American tools typically retail here for 2 to 4 times US prices...either way my expectations weren't high. I had in the back of my mind that maybe it was a fake, but anyway , didn't think I could lose at least I could give the knives away. Anyway , when it arrived package looked genuine ( but what would I know) ... if it IS genuine then it is interesting that package says "Made in Taiwan" but the knife AND blade say "China". Can't find it on the snappy site so can you guys tell me what I've bought ? FWIW it works really well for the same price as a chinese box cutter bought locally

Snap-on whored their name out for Chinese stuff like this to be sold at Ace Hardware, Costco, etc. I have one of the flashlights ...

I bought a Blue-Point box knife last year and in the package there was a slip of paper with the name of the actual company that made it just in case I needed warranty work.

Alltrade and Great American Tool Company are the two companies that I'm aware of producing Chinese tools under licensure from Snap-On. Snap-On doesn't sell this stuff, warranty it, or have anything to do with it besides having extended their name to them... which was a really questionable business decision.

FWIW Alltrade is a major Chinese manufacturer that builds tools under a variety of license agreements and labels. I believe some of their tool accessories like gear bags are even sold by Snap-On on their website.

they're all doing this BS "Rebrandng" **** and it's lame... I've seen it with Fluke, Klein, Starrett, etc..

I can't for the life of me understand how the extra few bucks made on the chinese garbage is worth the harm done to the brand in terms of "good will" or "brand value".

In the case of Snapon, only their hand tools, sockets, wrenches, socket drives (ratchet and pneumatic), and screwdrivers can be relied upon to be made by them and in the USA. There is one exception in the power tools area, and that's their 1/2" drive electric impacts. Almost everything else is a rebrand, and in many cases from China.

Seen them at our farm & ranch stores, didn't buy them as not to support China and let Snappy know "Bad Tool Mfg"!

The thing that I find interesting is that it is an American company , freely admitting that the tool is made in Taiwan, but when you open the packet it is clearly marked "China". So what is that all about ???

Talked to my snap on guy today about these rebranded cheapies being sold at Costco etc.....
He said they do it to keep the general household name alive.
If I was snap on I wouldn't put my name on this offshore junk!!!

If it was even average quality I could understand it, but most I've seen is pure **** like they paid for the name and now its time to rake in the money.

Worst is if your a "real" mechanic "friends" and relative are going to give you this **** even if you don't accidentally buy some yourself. I saw a batch of it on CL, just trashes the Snapon name.

Look close. The blade is stamped "China" but the packaging clearly says "Made in Taiwan".

I bought one of the inspection lamps from Costco and it broke within days so for quickness as the snapon van was there the same day I asked if he would replace it but he couldnt, lucky costco have the good returns policy they do. So sold the new one I got as it wascpoor quilty and bought a blue-point one from the van

IMHO when looking at asian tools , Japan then Taiwan then (sometimes far behind, depending).... China. I would buy a Taiwanese tool without much hesitation , usually pass on Chinese

My Snap On guy says they get money from all the sales made with the company name on them ie Sears Costco etc, not much but something.

Same kind of thing here, bought the light with reel. Light works great, its even been submerged in a parts washer on accident and came out still lit up; the cord on the reel however is pure junk. Snap On told me too bad on a warranty attempt; it wasn't even the abused part that broke.

anyone that knows me on here will tell you I hate made in China, and 99.9% of all my tools are not from China... but I'll buy from Taiwan with no problem, a world of difference in quality and a world of different in the way they pay and treat their workers.

Exactly. Which is why I got all excited when the subject of this post arrived.... Snap On packaging says very clearly on the outside : Made in Taiwan.."sweet" I think to my self (but would rather USA) !!! Not so sweet when the cutters were marked "China". Oh well. To be fair they actually aren't too bad and I like the "lock closed" feature ...never seen that on a box cutter before.

But I still think it must be breaking some law to state the wrong COO ??

actually... both ! But the knife was packaged so that the other side (no writing) was the side you can see whilst packaged
