the slides on my kr557 are getting pretty sticky and tired. snap on recently stopped making the slides for this box. i don't want to get a new box and would like to save this one. i am wondering if anyone has tried retrofitting newer style (ball bearing) slides in an older box and if so what was the procedure?

If your slides aren't bent or damaged, you can probably clean them up real good, lube them, and be on your merry way.

the problem is that the slide on the inside of the box is broken.the channel where the friction slide rides in broke. thats why i was thinking maybe just ditch this whole slide setup and upgrade.

Do you have a picture of the damage? The problem with upgrading the slides to ball bearing is that it's cost prohibitive. I just priced slides for my Mac toolbox and they wanted $18 and change apiece. That works out to about $700 for the number of drawers I have. Unless you can find somebody who is selling a bunch of leftover medium or heavy duty full extension cabinet slides on Craigslist for cheap, you would probably be paying exponentially more than the box is worth to do it. Then, you have mounting considerations.

i will try to get a picture up here in a few. my plan was to just fix the offending draw and fix the rest as they get really bad spreading the cost out a bit.

Possible, yes, but not very practical or cost effective unless you happen to have a pile of adequate slides that you obtained for next to nothing.

Call snap on and see if you can get replacement slides like you have. Actually they should warranty them, I wouldn't be surprised if they did. They warranty the plastic draw releases, just replaced one.

Just requested and received 7 pairs of slides for a 1977 KR557 B toolbox last week free of charge from Snap On.Drawers are way better now.

Alinc100, what is the number on the new slides you received? I don't have access to my spread sheet ATM, but want to double check it. They change slide part numbers ever so often.
