Eh. looks like a good deal? :dunno: I'm not real good pricing the newer boxes.

I believe that is a model KR637 top and KR657 bottom. Bottom should be all ball bearings. Top I believe is ball bearing on the 4 longer drawers. Top long and side drawers are really heavy friction slides.

Edit, and IIRC it has a locking compartment inside the top compartment. For valuables? :dunno: I always thought that was kinda funny. They give you the option to lock up the little compartment and leave the rest of the top open. That way the thief has all your tools at his disposal to try and open the locked compartment.

well, I don't really know diddly about S-O boxes, but if similar units even come up out here they seem to be closer to $1,000. maybe one of the S-O experts will enlighten us...

If I needed a personal box I would be all over it

I ain't an expert, but am almost positive it is a KR637 and KR657. They are older boxes when SO was getting into full ball bearing boxes. I think they started in the late 80's till the early 90's producing the one you linked.

They are 34" wide, 18" deep and ~56" tall. I think they are pretty good boxes, just pretty small compared to today's monsters. They are the moden equivalent of the iconic KR537 and KR557.

Here is the same box.

I think that model was the first off color special boxes SO made.

So I was off on the model number? Are these respectable boxes? In comparison to the older KR537/557? Is that a good price on those boxes?

I'm not the least bit familiar with the newer (past ~1988) ball bearing boxes. They tend to usually be way out of my price range. All friction slides for me. :rocker:

pretty sure your model numbers are correct

my only set of roller slide boxes are the 90th anv editions,

everything else i have is friction slide, and pre '85

comparison pic, between new and old.

What is your take on the newer KR637/657 ball bearing box vs the older KR537/KR557 friction slide? I just think those KR537's have a cool layout with the side door. Looks like they went away with that on the later KR637. I haven't seen or heard much about the boxes originally posted.

You must be vertically blessed. Doesn't that mid box add quite a bit of height to the stack?

they are both good slides.
the little side door on the older ones can be a PITA in a cramped space, it has to be fully open before the drawers dont make contact.

i orginally had my boxes reversed, and the little door hit my other box :headshake

i really dont like the narrow stack of drawers for a couple of reasons, they are really small, a couple of them would be ok, but theres just too many :willy_nil
2nd of all with the drawers, the other full width drawers just aint wide enough. if i wanted a 26" wide box, i'd buy a 26" wide box, and not spend the extra money on a 33" wide.

i've never used either set as "working" boxes,
i have a KR550/555b at work. cant see in the the top of that friggin thing either :headscrat
the harley boxes are even taller....:wtf:

yea the boxes are really tall, i'm 6' and cant see in the top, but i dont keep anything i really need up there, it's more like a junk drawer...:spit:

most of my common use hand tools are in the mid box, top couple drawers in the roller cab and lower drawers in the top box.

guess i'm just too "old skool" for a double, triple or quad bay :bounce:

I'm in TX for the week, so sorry. I already picked up that combo for 400 earlier this month. Good price though

Not a bad older SnapOn set for the money.

Below are pics so we'll know what this looked like when link is dead.
