I had a Craftsman tip over to about a 65 degree position on me once, just about popped a gasket getting it righted but thankfully only dumped a bunch of tools on the floor and got smacked in the mouth. Lesson learned!

The usual method this happens is that after it starts to tip other draws will open in a cascade effect and there's no stopping it.

This is the reason I have about 200 pounds of lead plate in the bottom under the last drawer. If you take out the bottom drawer you see that there is about 3" of dead space there - just about all toolboxes I've seen are build this way - a few pounds of weight in there will counter balance just about any number of open drawer situations.

I had that happen to my first tool chest as a 3rd year. It only had detent drawers, needed to lock it before moving it. My coworker could not be bothered to ask me to move it, gave it a push and they all rolled out, trashed both top and bottom chests.

I dumped a brand new in the box Homak cabinet over trying to get it out of the truck by myself. Fortunately the packaging was pretty decent, so it only got a little dent on the bottom front edge.

I have heavy steel floor plates for securing equipment racks down (bolt to concrete floor) to prevent this kind of thing but racks generally don't ever need to be moved so that method would be a pita for a tool box and why I'm not using them. That's a great idea!

Yup.. And it wouldn't cost $5 grand to replace.. Really does **** though. At least nobody got hurt.

For the average mechanic it would be a major kick to the nads to have to replace the box after a spill like that but if you read the thread, the guy works for Snapon. If I interpreted him right, he said that he just rolled a new box out from storage and is back in business.

I'm occasionally annoyed when my Lista box makes me close an open drawer before opening another one, but not so much now after seeing this thread.

I had my 1022 start to tip once. Where it was parked, it leaned slightly to the drawer side. Not much problem with drawer drifting. One day putting stuff away, I had every drawer just that the lock and roll wasn't latched. Well I had just enough drawers open that it lend enough all the drawers went. I was standing right there and caught it enough to keep it from fully going over. Two other guys rushed over and we got it back up right. Only messed up the slides on the bottom drawer, but my SO guy warrantied them.

Had that almost happen to me once. The lock n roll system is a necessity anymore with the amount of tooling you can put into those boxes.

I bought a Snap On top/bottom for $100 that had tipped over like that, destroyed several drawers in the lower unit along with slides. I put the top good drawers in the bottom, sold the top without drawers to someone who had the same top but was rusty. End result $50 Snap On box.

Initially that's what I thought, it was due to opening too many drawers but after reading the op in the original thread (who posted it) his buddy was trying to close just the overloaded bottom drawer. The other drawers weren't open to begin with, but as it started to tip caused a cascade effect where gravity pulled the rest of the drawers open. Bummer. Not sure if latching drawers would have helped, that much weight and going over is going over. Always a good idea to have something on top and/or secured to a wall (like shelf racks) especially when overloading the drawers like that. Sorta like a wheelbarrow, just cause that much fits in the tub doesn't mean you should pack it full. 10cu ft of lead weighs more than 10cu ft of feathers.

That is why I don't want someone farting around with my toolbox... I had a Snap-On top and bottom tipped by a co-worker some years back...

Another reason Sonic anti-tilt is slept on.... My boxes literally cannot tip over, because I can only open one drawer at a time!

In the plant we built heavy duty chassis and put 72” Kennedy BB boxes on them and towed them with three wheel Taylor Dunn electric carts.

One day the old grizzled mech told the village idiot to go get a specialized tool out of the crib.

Instead of using his Taylor Dunn he jump on the other mech cart that was still hooked up to tool box chassis.

As we all yelled no he did a sharp u turn in the aisle at full throttle.

Much worse than above.

The mech was having operators return sockets months later.

Well, never say never.
The central locking they employ has been deriguere in the office furniture world for decades. Even the cheapest(mostly) are equipped with central locking to prevent more than one drawer at a time from being opened.
None of my Snappy, Mac or Matco boxes have this safety feature but should have, especially at the price. I make it a point to ballast the bottom drawers with my heaviest tools.

My snap on and Cornwell boxes both have drawer latches so the drawers don't slide open on an incline. Even harbor freight has them. I had a lista with the one drawer at a time. What a pain in the *** trying to find something. Only idiots need nanny safeties.

One-at-a-time safety feature needs to be industry standard. I saw a video of a tool box tip over and hit a car. Several people (the mechanic, the shop owner, the vehicle owner) had a bad day because of that. I reckon the lawyer probably had a good day.

Had this happen to me 30 years ago. My toolbox was at the back of the shop alignment machine. Another teck reached into a vehicle on the hoist, hit the key and the vehicle was in gear. Vehicle drove off the hoist, hitting the alignment machine into my toolbox tipping it over. Ended up needing 2 drawers and 2 sets of sliders. Shop paid the cost, no questions asked. I am just glad that I had the top box bolted to the bottom. The drawers came open but the top box was not damaged. Had to spend at least 2 hours picking up tools.
Also saw another box tipped before that. We had a youg handicapped person in to sweep floors and clean up. He got upset one day and walked up to the back of another techs tool box and just pushed the whole thing over. His dad ended up buying the tech a new tool box.
