Snap-On box value?

My brother-in-law passed away on May 1st. We’ve been working on an estate sale today that will finish tomorrow. This afternoon we found a really cool Snap-On tool box in his storage building with assorted Snap-On, SK, Cornwell and other tools in it. We’re trying to determine what to ask for the box alone. It’s vintage as his grandfather wrenched with it in the 1950’s working on diesel equipment. Any thoughts? Thanks!

There should be a number somewhere on it normally in the back.
I think early 60's I have a later version that I used as my track box in the late 70's to 90's.
It is a heavy beast.

unless you find someone who really wants that specific box, i would imagine that it really isn't worth a lot. i'd ask 50$, and accept 40$

the tools, depending on what you have, right be worth something. look at a representative selection on ebay, choose the Sold filter (on the left side of the screen) to see what they are selling for, as opposed to what people are asking.

if you decide to sell any of it, there is a classified section here. you could use it as a place to post your stuff before going to ebay, which is going to want a piece of the action.

Don't think it's worth a lot but probably more than $50. I'd ask $250 and be flexible with offers. That Snap-on badge is worth $50 to the right buyer.

Honestly I would give you $100 for it without any fuss. Not because of the Snap-on label, but because it is a heavy box that would fulfill a need of mine for a box in the back of one of my trucks. Might even got to $150 depending on how nice drawers and everything still works. Too bad you are on the opposite side of the country from my location.

And if I am willing to go that high, I am quite certain that someone will easily pay double what I will just because of the Snap-on name plate that is on the box.

I think that box is a KR59, it's probably worth a couple hundred easy. Old snap-on tools can be pricey, a lot of collectors around that could price that stuff for you.

I had that exact set up minus the removable tray, but it was just about perfect condition with the original key. Sold it for a little over $200 and took forever to sell.

Why not clean it up and use it? You have some history of who used the box. It would look cool on a workbench with drill bits, files or as nut storage.

there alot of compamies that made that exact same box under different names, so if you could find someone who wanted it, take whatever you can get. I figure $40 be a high price. That is usually a pawn shop box.

In that condition $50. If you clean it up and sit on it until the right buyer comes along, then you could be talking about some of these other prices. By cleaning, I mean paint.

I would think the tote tray alone makes the value of the box and tray at least 100-125. Not many boxes of that vintage still have the original tote trays.

so, the suggestions are all over the map.

i watch the local craigslist and fb marketplace for snapon boxes. just bought a KR1000B for 850$. good shape, new tumbler locks, all the drawer liners, including the space accessible from the top. definitely "lived in", but not abused. there are still a bunch around here for 2000$ . . . . . .

i suppose, in the end, it depends on what you want to do with it. if you are looking to maximize the return, go higher on the price. if you want it to move, go low. if you want someone to appreciate it, find someone local who will use it, rather than hoard it (potential for high price) or flip it (potential for low price).

They certainly are...

Maybe it's a regional thing, but anything with the Snap-On name in my area is high priced. I think that box would be at least $200 if it were on the Minneapolis Craigslist.

sure, they are expensive around here, but do they sell? things like that with "high" prices languish here for months, and the ads occasionally getting refreshed, until they finally expire.

but you are likely correct, there are certainly dramatic differences in interest in things like this around the country. what seems consistent is that the sellers largely seem to think anything with Snap-on written on it is worth a fortune:

That’s always an expensive set.

If I was selling that box where I live I’d start at $250 and have a little room if necessary.

Pullers do not go bad or out of style. The current price on that stuff falls between 6 and 8k.

My later box was given to me from a well known driver and has stickers and memories I can not replace. Even though it has been replaced as my track box I could not get rid of it.

The asking price for the puller set on craiglist is a good deal. $2000 for the complete set and cabinet is cheap.

KR56's from the 70' to 80's go from $200 to $300. Some special editions, there is a higher asking price. The older well used box in this thread is worth about $100, they are used for road boxes.

Thanks for all of the feedback. We’re going to price the box at $125 and if we can’t get that, I may restore it for one of my nephews. It would be cool for them to have their great-grandfather’s box one day I’m thinking. The box is heavy, not beat up, the drawers work well. It just needs a good cleaning and a respray. If I restore it, I’ll post up a restoration thread.
