I've been planning on buying a lathe so I've been on the search for tools related to machining such as dial indicators, micrometers, etc. I found out an older machinist I know was going to retire and sell his tools, so I made a deal with him a few months ago to buy his when he retired. I also got his tool boxes.

I know there are some Snap On collectors around here so I thought I would post up pics of the boxes. I'd like to know roughly when they were made and an estimate on the value of the boxes. I doubt I'd sell them, but I am curious to see how good a deal I got.

I'm in central Texas, about 120 miles northwest of Austin. My forum name is my location...

I also bought two metal Kennedy machinist's chests, but forgot to take pics of them today.

I haven't gotten around to doing a full inventory of the tools, but here are a few pics of some of the stuff in the Snap On boxes:

One big drawer is full of Craftsman and Snap On wrenches and sockets. Most of the mics and indicators are Mitutoyo and Starrett.

Some would argue that the repaint ruined the boxes. If I saw them on Craigslist, that would be my #1 negotiation tool with the seller. If they were untouched, and had the original paint, $200 would buy them around here. As they sit? I would try to take them home for half that but would settle at $150 if I really wanted them. As noted, prices vary widely based on location.

zkling is correct on the box types.

Well, I thought the boxes would be worth more than that, but I'm still satisfied with my buy. I got all four boxes and all the tools for a little over a grand. One of the tools is a Mitutoyo 24 inch caliper that I've seen advertised for $699 on the net, and it's brand new. I think I done good...

I think they look pretty cool in black, 150-200 is a steal with the tools if included

I was talking about one stack (two boxes, no tools). If you got all 4 boxes with the tools included, yes, you've done extremely well on your purchase.

Correct me if I'm wrong,
but doesn't some manufacturer or other supply toolboxes in black?
