Bought this today on cl. The guy said it was his grandpas and all original. He also said it is 1948 H2442 model. I have yet to find it in snap ons catalogs and don't have access to caterpillar catalogs.
His pictures looked great. Once I got there it has obviously been painted and two of the slides have been welded on. The tray has had some reshaping done to it also. I have completely tore the box apart to find snap on numbers but have not found them yet.

the boxes did not have model numbers stamped on them until, about 1955. could you post a close up of the label that says Snap on .
Nice find, I have never seen one.

I've found a few Blackhawk emblems on line but this is the first snap on I have seen so far. The box looks almost identical to the Blackhawk model.

Very cool. Sadly I haven't found anything like that on CL or in pawn shops / antique stores around here. I do look though.

I have had quite the dry spell myself until a week or so ago. Picked up a bunch of plomb wrenches and sockets one day, next day I bought a extremely rare hammer and now this. I'm hoping luck stays with me :pimpflash

Cat published a Service Tools book, I have Edition 9 which I figure is c1955 as there are a few references to D9 tools.

It is Form 32622 and page 23 is the go to page.

8H8500 is the Part # for the tool case and contents, the case alone is listed as 5F4763 with vendors # K-116

Case 27 long, 11 high and 11 1/4 deep.

5 drawers and a "tote" tray.

Over 90 tools are listed, all Snap-on each with Cat Part No and Vendors Part No.

It would be relatively easy to refill this case but you'd be looking for pre Flank drive wrenches and sockets. Sockets are 3/8 , 1/2 and 3/4 drive.

Too cool. If you snagged that north of the Salmon River, I might have to steal it from your garage tonight.

HUMBER, Thanks! Do you happen to have a link to that? I assume you have the actual catalog. Can you post a picture?

This is awesome.

Did the owner mention what happened to the original contents? Any chance they are still there?

With the badge and the overall appearance of the box, I wouldn't worry about the non-original work and pieces. While not ideal, they do not detract from what makes the box special. Congrats.

Thanks LUG, even after I seen the work done on it I still didn't hesitate buying it. It was on cl for 4 days taunting me every time I opened my phone. I did enough research in those 4 days that I was comfortable making a deal. I like the uncommon.
The work done is well done. I am happy with it. My only hiccup is I am not a snap on guy lol. I do like this box though.

Here is another add that is tougher to read but clearly Blackhawk. I wonder if Blackhawk made the boxes for caterpillar with specific specs.

Nice box. Saw the ad, but it's a 2 hour drive or a bit more for me. Will be interesting to try to fill it with the correct tools. I'm doing that with an old Williams box.

There's just something about the yellow version of this toolbox that catches my eye. Can't quite put my finger on it. It'll come to me...

Let's see there's school bus yellow, canary yellow and oh yeah Caterpillar Yellow! I bet that's it!

It does look good in cat yellow ;)
