does snap on sell a non flank drive combination wrench. I am currently adandoning my craftsman combo wrenches to upgrade prefferably to snap on. but i really dont want the flank drive or flank drive plus wrenches. the whole reason im in this situation where i need new wrenches is because i have worn out my 17 mm craftsman wrench from removing ujoints from 1 particular transmission design. its a hyundai forklift and we have more than 10 at the shop that are all leaking from the pumps so i have to pull all of them out. the ujoints come apart in half and are held together by 4 allen bolts with nuts on the back side. so i need a 17 mm wrench to hold the nut while i turn the allen wrench. the problem is there is not enough space to completely fit a open end on the ujoint bolts and not enough room for a socket or box end. you can barely get a little bit of the open end on the nut. i have worn out my 17 mm and almost all the nuts applying too much pressure and really need a quality wrench but the flank drive or any version is only going to be worse than what i got. so does anyone know if they sell non flankdrive anymore or anyone know where i can find some. Thanks in advance

You know that Flank Drive refers to the box-end, right? I'd probably just grind the OD of a cheap socket or box end of that NFG 17mm wrench to fit.

??????????

How is the flank drive a bad thing? I'm lost.

FD+ has notches in the open end to allow for more bite and a lobular design on the box end to allow the wrench to contact the fastener away from the corner.

FD is the only has the lobular box end. so, if you're using the open end of the wrench, a general FD Snap On wrench will work.

How is your 17mm worn out? Pictures are worth their weight in gold.....How about exchanging the C-man wrench for a new one?

Craftsman wrench fits, but a Snap-On won't? I'm confused.

i will take picture tommorwo to show what i am talking about but basically i can only grab the nut with the tips of the my open end werench and my craftsman wrench has began to spread making it a loose fit and rounding the nut and the tip of the wrench. so a fd wrench wouldnt be 17 at the tip like i need it making it about as good for this job as the craftsman. also i can fit a socket onto the nut but there is no room to put the wrench on the socket. again ill post pics tommorow to show exactly what im talking about beause the way i describing it probably isnt the best.

i think he's referring to the fact that snap-on angles the tips of the open end to "ease installation onto a fastener" but if thats all hes grabbing something with, like the last eighth of an inch on the open end, then there must be a better way.

"Flank Drive" refers to the box end and "Flank Drive Plus" refers to the open end.

A "Flank Drive" combination wrench will have the Flank Drive box end with a regular smooth open end.

A "Flank Drive Plus" combination wrench will have a Flank Drive box end with an open end that has teeth.

I had a guy leave bad feedback on eBay for me because I was selling Flank Drive wrenches and he expected the grooves on the open end. He wouldn't listen to reason even though he was completely wrong.

yah flank drive is the normal end of the wrench, flank drive plus is the one with the notches cut in for better nut/bolt grip and prevent wrench slippage

Your best bet may be the Mac or a modified cheap wrench. Poke around the home stores and parts places, you might find an off brand that works better. The flank drive may not do the trick since it is more open at the tip as is a Few models of the Mac. I ran into that once before using a SO flank on a u-joint. Or find a pre-flank on eBay

The gearwrench long pattern combination wrenches (non ratcheting) are so nice they almost make me wish I didn't buy my flank drive plus wrenches. I really can't tell any quality differences between the two except the gearwrenches have a thicker beam that is more comfortable in the hand and are a lot cheaper. They have regular "flank drive" on the open end that works very well.

Do you think you could get a flarenut crowsfoot on the nut? If you can get a socket on it, it should work as long as you have clearance for the extension/ratchet,

yes i can only fit the last little bit of the wrench on the nut. but my cman wrench has too much play in the end now because it has started to spread/round the tips. i an fit a socket on the nut but not a socket with the ratchet or breaker bar.

ok so the regular flank drive has a standard open end just like the craftman im trying to replace? if that is hte case than the regular flank drive would do what i need it to do.

maybe it depends on how thin the crowsfoot would be. problem is i do not have one to find out

Snap-on part number OEXM170B is a Flank Drive 17 mm wrench (no grooves in the open end) I believe this is what you are looking for.

yeah if i could find one with the same outside dimensions as a chrome socket

Don't have a Snap On combo in 19 mm. (or anything in 17 mm.) but my half-moon Snap On 19 mm. has a thinner ring than my Wright 19 mm. combo
Looking at my Craftsman 11/16" 's ring it looks to be a little thicker than the Wright 19 mm. one. That wrench is actually kind of beefy in the box end. It is at least 30 years old I think.

I don't have anything but Wright in 17 mm. combo but it is thicker than the 19 mm. Snap On ring of the half-moon.
I think I saw an advertisement that said that Snap On could use the thin walls because of better steel.
Fancy German wrenches-I wonder if they have thin ring ends
9/16" Craftsman combo has thicker ring than the 15 mm. ring of that same Snap On half-moon--that 15 mm. ring is broached slightly off-center-shame for something so expensive! :beer2: (the Craftsman 5/8" in that set is quite a bit off-center)

i dunno how thin these box ends are but i have been looking for 0 degree box ends for a while now and could not find them on the snapon website. i was looking in the wrench link so thanks for bringing these to me. definetely buying a set

I have a full set of them and love them. i use them everyday at work as an auto tech. Definitely my favorite wrenches..the box ends are very thin and deep
